Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Kitchener
We pour shed pads, hot tub pads and garage slabs across Kitchener, from new lots in the south-end surveys around Doon to older backyards in the Berlin core. Most of the city sits on the sand of the Waterloo Moraine, so a pad here is won at the base and the edges: a compacted granular base, firm edges and downspout water kept off the slab. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Most of Kitchener sits on the Waterloo Moraine, the glacial sand the early settlers called the Sandhills. Sand drains meltwater instead of holding it in layers under a slab, so a pad here tends to heave less than one on clay.
Sand moves, though. Where runoff arrives at the same spot year after year, often from a downspout, it carries the sand away grain by grain. A pad edge then sits over a hollow and cracks. A shed pad, a hot tub pad or a garage floor in Kitchener depends on the base under it and on where the water goes.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, mesh or 10M rebar, and the compacted Granular A base, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page covers what Kitchener's ground and homes change. The site visit and written quote are free.
Sand drains, but it also washes out
On the moraine sand that covers most of Kitchener, frost is less of a worry than erosion. A pad is a hard, flat roof over the ground, and everything that runs off a shed or a garage roof has to go somewhere. If it lands beside the slab, it can undercut the edge.
So before the forms go in, we work out with you where the roof water and the pad's own runoff will go. We compact the granular base in lifts so it stays where we put it, and we keep the edges firm.
Low ground near the Grand River
Along the Grand River and the creeks that feed it, Schneider and Strasburg among them, the water table sits higher than on the sandhills above. On those lots a pad needs good drainage around it, and a hot tub or workshop slab should not sit in a spot where water collects. We check which ground you have at the site visit and build the base to suit it.
New lots in the south end, older yards in the core
The south end, around Doon and the newer surveys, is where Kitchener has grown hardest. The fill around a new foundation keeps settling for a year or two. If you are pouring a pad for a shed or a garage there, wait until the builder has set the final grade, and we compact our own base rather than trust loose fill.
In the old Berlin core and the postwar streets around it, a slab job often starts with taking out an old cracked pad. Our concrete removal and demolition page explains the tear-out. If the garage floor is sound but flaking, our repair and resurfacing page shows when a resurface is enough.
Reinforcement, thickness and permits
A shed or hot tub pad takes welded wire mesh. A garage or shop floor carries vehicles, so we tie a 10M rebar grid. A shed pad is 100 mm thick, and a garage slab is 125 to 150 mm, with the edges thickened for a floating garage pad. A hot tub pad has to be dead level and reinforced for the load.
Most detached garages need a building permit, and many small sheds do not. The rules differ by municipality, so we flag which side your project is on at the site visit and you confirm it with the city.
Straight answers
Does Kitchener's sandy ground make a slab easier or harder?
Easier in one way and harder in another. The moraine sand drains meltwater away, so frost lifts a pad less than it would on clay. The trade is erosion: where runoff concentrates, sand washes out from under a slab edge. We compact a granular base, keep the edges firm and keep roof water off the pad.
Can I pour a garage pad on a new lot near Doon right away?
Wait until the builder has set the final grade, since the fill around a new foundation keeps settling for a year or two. The ground around a new foundation keeps settling for a year or two. We compact our own base rather than trust loose fill. Ask for a quote in spring if you want a slot in the pour season.
Does a lot near the Grand River change a hot tub or shed pad?
It can. The low ground along the river and the creeks has a higher water table than the sandhills above, so we pay extra attention to drainage around the pad. We look at your lot before we quote.
How much does a concrete pad cost in Kitchener?
The size, the thickness, the reinforcement, the base the ground needs, and access all move the number. We write a real figure after a free site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Do I need a permit for a garage pad in Kitchener?
Most detached garages need a building permit and many small sheds do not, and the cutoff varies by municipality. We flag which side your project lands on at the site visit, and you confirm with the city.
