Most of Stouffville sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel across the top of York Region. Sand drains fast, but loose sand can wash and shift. So when an old slab comes out here, what matters is what is left under it and whether the new base will be contained and compacted. See our Stouffville page for everything else we do in town.
The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Stouffville ground and Stouffville homes change about that job.
The older core: steps, aprons and driveways
The streets near Main Street and Market Street hold the town's older homes. Before any step, apron or driveway comes out, we look at whether the piece needs replacing at all, and we tell you what we find at the site visit, so you do not pay for a tear-out you do not need.
On these older lots, a damp basement and failing parging sometimes sit beside a cracked slab. If the tear-out is next to the foundation, we look at the wall while the ground is open. See parging for that repair.
Moraine sand and rural clay: the base after the tear-out
On moraine sand, frost heave is less of a worry than on clay. The catch is that loose sand shifts. After the old concrete is out, we check the granular that is left, then contain and compact it before anything new goes in, so the new slab does not settle unevenly.
Off the moraine, the farmland across rural Whitchurch carries heavier clay, and a country lot toward Ballantrae, Vandorf or Gormley can sit half on sand and half on clay. Clay holds water and heaves with frost, so a slab that sat on clay may need a deeper, better-compacted base the second time. We read the ground across the whole area before we promise a base. See concrete driveways in Stouffville and concrete patios in Stouffville for what goes back in.
Newer surveys: making room for the bigger pour
South and east of Main Street, many homes still have the narrow driveway and bare backyard the builder left. Where a small driveway has to come out ahead of a wider one, or a pad has to make way for a proper patio, fill around a new house can keep settling for a season or two, so we check compaction before we pour anything that has to stay flat.
Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one trip, not two. Stouffville jobs book into planned trips into the area, so you get a real date, not a same-day truck. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Do the old steps at my home near Main Street have to be removed?
Not always. We look at the steps at the free site visit and tell you straight whether they need to come out or whether replacing the piece is the better choice.
Does the base need to change after old concrete comes out on Oak Ridges Moraine sand?
Yes. Sand drains fast, but loose granular will not hold a base by itself. We check what is left under the old slab, then contain and compact it so the new slab does not settle unevenly. That is decided on site.
My rural lot near Ballantrae is part sand, part clay. Does that change the removal?
It changes what goes back in. The tear-out is the same method, but a stretch on clay needs a deeper, better-compacted base than the sandy stretch beside it. We check the ground across the whole area at the site visit.
How much does concrete removal cost in Stouffville?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
