Concrete Patios in Stouffville

We pour concrete patios, gazebo slabs and pool decks across Stouffville and the rest of Whitchurch-Stouffville. Most backyards in town sit on fast-draining Oak Ridges Moraine sand, so the job is a base that is compacted and held at its edges; many rural lots carry heavier farm clay, which needs a deeper base. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Stouffville is a town of two halves, and a patio here depends on which half your yard is in. South and east of Main Street, survey after survey of new detached homes has gone in over the last fifteen years, and many of them still have the bare backyard the builder left. Near the old core and Market Street, the homes are older. See our Stouffville page for everything else we do in town.

We treat a patio as a drainage job that is also a nice place to sit. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house, pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw winters, and set it on a compacted granular base. The full method and specs are on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Stouffville ground and Stouffville homes change about that job.

Moraine sand: hold the base in place

Most of Stouffville sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel across the top of York Region. Sand drains fast, so a patio here rarely sits in standing water the way it can on a clay lot. The catch runs the other way: loose sand can wash and shift, and a base that is not contained and compacted can creep out from under the slab.

So on a sandy lot we compact the granular base hard and keep it held at the edges of the pour. We also look at where your downspouts empty. Roof water dumped at the edge of a patio on sand can carry the base away, a little each storm, until a corner drops.

New surveys: let the ground settle first

In a new Stouffville subdivision, the backyard looks finished, but the fill around the house keeps settling for a season or two. A patio poured on that ground can sink at the house edge and tip the wrong way, toward the wall.

So for a new lot, we usually tell you to wait through the first spring, so you can see how water moves across the yard. Then we check the compaction before we pour. Spring is the smart time to ask for the quote, because the pouring season out here books up fast through summer.

Rural lots, gazebos and pool decks

Off the moraine, the farmland across rural Whitchurch carries heavier clay, and a country property toward Ballantrae, Vandorf or Gormley can sit half on sand and half on clay. Clay holds water and heaves with frost, so a patio on clay needs a deeper, better-compacted base than one on sand. We check the ground where the patio will go before we set the base.

A pad that carries a gazebo is not ordinary patio space: bring the plan to the site visit, and we plan the base, the edge thickness and the anchors for it. A pool deck gets a broom or exposed aggregate finish for wet feet and a slope away from the pool. Stouffville jobs book into planned trips into the area, so you get a real date on the calendar.

Questions

Straight answers

Our Stouffville yard is sandy. Does a patio need a different base?

Yes. Moraine sand drains well, so frost heave is less of a fight than on clay, but loose sand can wash and shift. We compact the base hard and hold it at the edges so it cannot creep out from under the slab, and we make sure downspout water does not empty onto the edge of the patio.

We just moved into a new Stouffville subdivision. When can we pour a patio?

Usually after the first spring, once the lot has been through a freeze and you can see how water moves across it. Fresh subdivision fill keeps settling for a season or two, so we check compaction on the site visit and tell you if the lot is ready.

Can you pour a patio and a pad for a gazebo together?

Yes. Bring the gazebo plan to the visit. We plan the base, edge thickness and anchors for that structure before the pour, and quote the patio and the pad as one job.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Stouffville?

The finish you pick and how easily the concrete truck can reach the backyard set most of the price. Size, the base your ground needs and any steps or levels set the rest, and a moraine-sand yard and a rural clay yard are different jobs. We do not post a flat number, because it would mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
