Concrete Removal & Demolition in St. Catharines

We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across St. Catharines, from the century streets of Merritton, Port Dalhousie and downtown to the newer lots in Grantham and Vansickle. The ground is thick clay left by glacial Lake Iroquois, the winters thaw and refreeze again and again, and some lots sit on old filled canal ground, so we plan each removal around what is under the slab. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

St. Catharines does not get one long freeze. Between Lake Ontario and the escarpment, the temperature crosses zero again and again from December through March, and the ground under most of the city is thick clay that holds water and heaves with frost. See our St. Catharines page for everything else we do in the city.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what St. Catharines ground and St. Catharines homes change about that job.

Merritton, Port Dalhousie and downtown: older slabs, older ground

Merritton grew up tight against the canal locks, Port Dalhousie was the lake harbour, and the downtown blocks follow St. Paul Street. These are some of the oldest streets in the city. Water in a crack freezes and widens it a little more with each thaw.

With the old concrete gone, we look at the base under it and how the ground drains. If the base held water, we dig it out and rebuild it before anything new goes in.

Old canal fill: checking the ground once the slab is out

The first three Welland canals were filled in across St. Catharines, some under Highway 406 and the QEW and some under the parks. Ground that was filled long ago can settle unevenly under a slab. Where there is any sign of old fill once the slab is out, we dig to solid material and build the base back in compacted lifts rather than trust what is there. That work goes in the written quote, not in a surprise at the end.

Grantham, Vansickle and the newer lots: making room for the bigger pour

In the postwar belts through Grantham, Western Hill and Glenridge, a worn-out driveway and front walk often come out together. Out in Vansickle, Power Glen and the newer surveys toward Louth, a narrow driveway or small pad is often in the way of a widened driveway, a garage pad or a patio, so it comes out first.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open. See concrete driveways in St. Catharines and concrete patios in St. Catharines for what goes back in.

Tight lots and getting a machine in

Our smallest machines clear a 36 inch gate. Where a machine cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit, so the lawn, the fence and the neighbour's side are planned for, not found out on the day.

St. Catharines is the first major stop as our crews reach Niagara along the lakeshore, so removal here books into the regular run in season. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did my older Merritton or Port Dalhousie driveway heave, and will a new one do the same?

The city thaws and refreezes over and over from December to March, and the clay under it holds water. When we take the old slab out, we check the base and the drainage, and fix what moved it before the new pour.

My lot is near one of the old buried canals. Does that change the removal?

It can, so we check. Ground that was filled long ago can settle unevenly. If we see signs of old fill once the slab is out, we dig to solid material and rebuild the base in compacted lifts. That work goes in the written quote.

Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in St. Catharines?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
