Concrete Patios in St. Catharines
We pour concrete patios across St. Catharines, from new-lot backyards in Vansickle, Power Glen and the Louth-side surveys to the older yards in Merritton, Port Dalhousie and downtown. A patio here sits on the thick clay glacial Lake Iroquois left across the city, so we slope it about 2 percent away from the house on a compacted granular base, and we pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete for winters that freeze and thaw again and again. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Most of St. Catharines sits on clay. Glacial Lake Iroquois left a thick layer of it between the escarpment and Lake Ontario, and clay does not drain. Water that reaches it stays there, and it can sit against a foundation wall long after the snow goes. A patio is a big flat surface right beside the house, so on clay the first question is where its water goes.
The second is the winter. Between the lake and the escarpment, the city crosses zero again and again from December through March. A patio does not carry cars, but it lives through the same thaws and refreezes a driveway does, and every cycle works water into the surface.
The full method, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base, the control joints and the cure times, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what St. Catharines changes. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
On Iroquois clay, slope comes first
A patio poured flat, or sloped toward the house, sends rain and spring melt straight at the foundation. On sand that water might soak away. On St. Catharines clay it stays and pushes on the wall. So we set every patio about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts empty before the forms go in.
Clay also moves with frost when water is held under a slab. We dig out the soft ground and compact a granular base, so the patio does not settle into a new, wrong angle two winters from now. If your yard already puddles against the house, the honest quote may start with regrading, or with a patio set higher than you pictured.
Thaw after thaw: mix, seal and no salt
St. Catharines has a mild winter for Ontario, and that is the problem. A slab that freezes once and stays frozen has an easy time. A slab that freezes, thaws and freezes again takes water into its pores each time, and the ice lifts thin flakes off the top. Salt walked in from the driveway makes it worse.
So the patio gets the same 32 MPa air-entrained mix we use for driveways. Its tiny air pockets give freezing water room to expand. We seal it at about 28 days, once it has cured, and we ask you to keep de-icing salt off it for the first winter.
New-lot backyards and older canal-side yards
In Vansickle, Power Glen and the newer surveys toward Louth, the patio is often where the builder left graded dirt. That soil is disturbed backfill, and it keeps settling for a season or two. We check the compaction and compact the base before we pour. If you also want a pad for a hot tub, see our concrete slabs and garage pads page.
In Merritton, Port Dalhousie and the downtown blocks near Twelve Mile Creek, a new patio often starts with taking out an old cracked slab and finding what failed under it. Some of these yards are near the old buried canals, and ground filled long ago can settle unevenly. Where we see signs of old fill, we dig to solid material and build the base back up in compacted lifts. If the old patio sloped toward the house, the new one fixes that.
Finish, cure and when to book
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it.
Most patios take one to two days on site. You can walk on the new slab after 24 to 48 hours and set furniture on it after about a week. St. Catharines is the first major stop as our crews reach Niagara along the lakeshore, so in season a job here books into the regular run. Spring books up fast once the ground thaws, so quoting early is smart.
Straight answers
Why does slope matter so much for a patio in St. Catharines?
Because the city sits on clay that glacial Lake Iroquois left behind, and clay does not drain. Water that runs off a patio toward the house stays against the foundation wall. We slope every patio about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts empty before we pour.
It hardly gets cold here. Will a new patio really flake?
It can, because the mild winter means many thaws and refreezes, not one long freeze. Each cycle drives water into the surface and can lift thin flakes when it freezes again. We pour an air-entrained mix, seal the patio once it has cured, and ask you to keep de-icing salt off it for the first winter.
We just moved into a new build in Vansickle. When can we put in a patio?
After the builder sets the final grade, and ideally after the first spring, so you have seen how water moves across the yard. New-survey backfill keeps settling for a season or two, so we check and compact the base before we pour. A written quote in the spring usually gets a better slot.
Can you replace an old cracked patio behind an older house in Merritton or Port Dalhousie?
Yes. We take out the old slab, find what failed underneath, fix the base, and pour a new patio sloped away from the house. Near the old buried canals we check for signs of old fill and dig to solid material where we find it. That work goes in the written quote, not a surprise at the end.
How much does a concrete patio cost in St. Catharines?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, how much base the clay or old fill needs, and whether an old slab has to come out all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work, borders and multiple levels cost more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
