Fonthill sits on the Fonthill Kame, a hill of glacial sand and gravel that drains fast and heaves less than the clay under most of Niagara. That changes what an old slab leaves behind. When it comes out here, the question is less about frost and more about what is left under it, and whether the new base will be contained and compacted. See our Fonthill page for everything else we do in town.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Fonthill ground and Fonthill homes change about that job.

The older streets on the kame: steps, walks and second-life driveways

The established streets off Highway 20 and out toward Lookout Point send us the repair list: front steps that have shifted, walks broken up by tree roots and frost, and driveways past their service life. On free-draining sand and gravel, a shifted step is more often eroded bedding, roots or an aging pour than deep frost. Some steps can be levelled or rebuilt rather than torn out, and we tell you which, so you do not pay for a tear-out you do not need.

Sand and gravel: checking the base once the slab is out

Loose granular ground washes. On the steeper south and east faces of the hill, an old edge with nothing holding it can lose its base over a few wet springs. After the old concrete is out, we look at what is left, then compact the bedding and grade it so runoff leaves the slab instead of cutting along its edge.

If a slab is broken across several panels or the base has washed out beneath it, removal and a fresh pour on recompacted granular is the honest call. Most removal is day one of that work. See concrete driveways in Fonthill and concrete patios in Fonthill for what goes back in.

East Fonthill: newer lots, more flatwork to come

In the newer surveys, such as Summersides Village and Saffron Estates, lots often close as graded dirt out back, waiting on a patio, a garage pad or a wider driveway. If something already stands in the way, we take it out as part of the same job.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you deal with one crew, not two. Fonthill books into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.

Questions

Straight answers

Can my shifted Fonthill front steps be repaired instead of removed?

Often, yes. On the sand-and-gravel ground of the kame, steps usually move because the bedding eroded, a root pushed on them or the pour is old, not because of deep frost. Minor settlement can be levelled or resurfaced. If the slab is broken across several panels or the base has washed out, removal and a new pour is the better call. We tell you which at the free site visit.

Does the base need to change after old concrete comes out on the Fonthill Kame?

We check it every time. The ground drains fast, but loose sand and gravel can wash. We compact the bedding and grade the area so water leaves the slab, and we decide the rest on site, lot by lot.

How much does concrete removal cost in Fonthill?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
