Fonthill sits on the Fonthill Kame, a glacial hill of sand and gravel. It drains fast and heaves less than the clay under most of Niagara, so a slab here is less likely to be lifted by frost. The risk on a sloped lot is runoff washing out the base at the edge of the pad.
The job changes with the street. In East Fonthill, around Summersides Village, Saffron Estates and the newer surveys near the Meridian Community Centre, the call is often the garage-side pad, shed pad or hot tub slab a builder never poured. On the older streets up the hill, an old pad may need to come out first.
The full spec, thickness, reinforcement and base depth, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page covers what a Fonthill slab needs in particular. Send the form for a free written quote; the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
Sand and gravel under the pad
Free-draining ground helps a slab, but it does not remove the need for a base. Loose sand and gravel can wash, and on the steeper south and east faces of the kame a pad edge with no containment can lose its base over a few wet springs. We compact a Granular A base in lifts, thicken and contain the edges, and grade around the pad so water leaves the slab instead of running along it.
Garage and shed pads on new East Fonthill lots
New-survey soil is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two. Wait until the builder sets the final grade and you have seen how water moves across the lot, usually after the first spring. We compact the base mechanically instead of trusting fresh fill, even on the kame.
A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. We thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh is the right choice there.
Older streets up the hill
On the older streets off Highway 20 and toward Lookout Point, a worn pad is more often a washed-out base or tree roots than deep frost. When it is broken across several panels, we take it out with our removal and demolition service, fix the cause and pour again on a recompacted granular base. We tell you which after we see it.
Built for thaw cycles and salt
Freeze-thaw and winter road salt punish concrete in Niagara the same as anywhere. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete outdoors and on garage floors, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt, and saw control joints into every pour. When the building plan calls for them, anchor bolts and a floor that slopes to the door go in on pour day, when they are cheap.
Straight answers
Fonthill is on sand and gravel. Do I still need a compacted base under a garage pad?
Yes. The ground drains well, but loose granular ground can wash out from under an unsupported edge. We compact a Granular A base in lifts, contain the edges and grade water away from the slab.
We just moved into a new build in East Fonthill. When can we pour a garage or shed pad?
After the builder has set the final grade, usually following the first spring. New-survey soil is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two, so waiting avoids a pad that sinks or tips.
Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in Fonthill?
Rebar. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking and suits light pads like sheds and hot tubs, but a garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid.
How much does a garage pad cost in Fonthill?
The size of the pad, how the crew gets in, and what the ground needs all set the number, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
