Concrete Driveways in Fonthill
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Fonthill, from the new lots in East Fonthill to the established streets up on the kame. Fonthill sits on glacial sand and gravel, not the clay under most of Niagara, so a Fonthill driveway is built to stop its edges washing out more than to fight frost heave. Union-certified crews do the work, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Most of Niagara pours driveways on clay. Fonthill does not. The town sits on the Fonthill Kame, a glacial hill of sand and gravel that rises about 75 metres over the country around it. That ground drains fast and heaves far less than clay, which changes where the risk in a driveway sits.
On the kame, the danger is water running along the slab and washing out its base, mostly on the steeper south and east faces of the hill. So the work goes into a thickened, contained edge, a well-compacted base and grading that sends runoff off the driveway. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Fonthill driveway needs in particular.
Sand and gravel: less heave, more washout
On clay, water sits under a slab, freezes and lifts it. On the kame's sand and gravel, water moves down through the ground instead, so frost has a hard time building the ice that heaves concrete. That is good news for a Fonthill driveway.
The trade-off is that loose granular ground washes. Where a driveway runs down a slope, or where a downspout empties along its side, water can cut under an edge with nothing to hold it and carry the base away over a few wet springs. We thicken and contain the edges, compact the base well, and grade the driveway so water leaves the slab instead of running along it.
The mix still has to beat salt and freeze-thaw
Good drainage does not protect the surface. Freeze-thaw and winter road salt work on concrete in Fonthill the same as anywhere in Niagara. Every driveway we pour gets air-entrained 32 MPa concrete and sawn control joints, so the top holds up and cracks run where we put them.
New lots in East Fonthill, second driveways on the hill
In East Fonthill, around Summersides Village, Saffron Estates and the newer surveys near the Meridian Community Centre, many homes close with a driveway that needs widening or a garage pad still to come. New-survey ground is disturbed soil that keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically and do not trust fresh backfill, even on the kame.
Up the hill, on the older streets off Highway 20 and toward Lookout Point, a driveway is often on its second life. Replacement starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, find what failed under it (often a washed base or tree roots), fix that, and pour fresh. A Fonthill job books into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season.
Straight answers
Fonthill is on sand and gravel, not clay. Does a driveway here still need a deep base?
It needs a different base, not none. The kame's sand and gravel drains fast, so frost heave is less of a risk than on Niagara clay. The bigger risk is erosion: on a slope, water running along an edge can wash the base out. We put the effort into a well-compacted base, a thickened and contained edge, and grading that carries water off the slab.
We just moved into a new build in East Fonthill. When can we widen the driveway or add a garage pad?
After the builder sets your final grade, usually after the first spring, once you have seen how water moves across the lot. New-survey ground keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically before we pour. Asking for a quote in spring gets you a better slot before the summer rush.
Our old Fonthill driveway has cracked and sunk at one edge. Can you replace it?
Yes. On the kame, a sunken edge is more often a washed-out base or tree roots than frost. We tear out and haul away the old slab, fix the cause, and pour new concrete on a recompacted granular base. If only the surface is tired and the slab is sound, we will tell you resurfacing may be enough.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Fonthill?
Size sets the floor, then the finish, access, the base the lot needs, and whether an old slab has to come out. We do not post a flat price that would only mislead you. A firm written quote comes after a free visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
