Concrete Patios in Fonthill

We pour concrete patios across Fonthill, from bare backyards on the new lots in East Fonthill to replacement patios on the older streets up the kame. A Fonthill patio starts with three backyard questions: how the concrete reaches the yard, how you will use the space, and where the water goes. Union-certified crews do the work, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Fonthill sits on the Fonthill Kame, a glacial hill of sand and gravel. It drains fast and heaves less than the clay under most of Niagara, so on a sloped backyard the risk is runoff washing out an edge more than frost. See our Fonthill page for everything else we do in town.

A patio is a drainage job that is also a place to sit. We slope the slab away from the house, use air-entrained 32 MPa concrete for the freeze-thaw winters, and set it on a compacted granular base. The full method is on our concrete patios page. This page covers what a Fonthill backyard changes about that job.

Plan the backyard before the pour

Access comes first. If the concrete truck cannot get near the forms, the crew moves the mix by pump or by wheelbarrow, and that labour shows up in the quote. On a lot with a narrow side yard or a fence along the route, we name the access plan at the site visit and protect the lawn, gardens and fence along the way.

Then the use. A table and chairs need a plain slab, but a gazebo needs its footprint, post locations and anchoring before the pour, so the base, edge thickness and anchors match the structure. Bring the manufacturer's plan to the visit. For grip and budget, a broom finish works; exposed aggregate adds texture; stamped adds pattern and colour.

Then the water. We set the slope at about 2 percent away from the house and check where the downspouts empty. On a sloped Fonthill yard, we also thicken and contain the edges and grade so runoff leaves the patio instead of running along it.

New backyards in East Fonthill

In East Fonthill, around Summersides Village, Saffron Estates and the newer surveys near the Meridian Community Centre, many homes close with graded dirt out back, waiting for a patio. New-survey ground is disturbed soil that keeps settling for a season or two. A patio poured on it too soon can sink at the house edge and tip toward the wall.

So for a new lot, we usually tell you to wait until the builder sets the final grade, often after the first spring, when you have seen how water moves across the yard. Even on the kame, we compact the base mechanically and do not trust fresh backfill.

Older patios up the hill

On the older streets off Highway 20 and toward Lookout Point, a patio or a set of back steps is often near the end of its life. On the kame, a patio that has sunk or broken is more often a washed-out base or tree roots than deep frost.

When the slab is sound and only the surface is tired, resurfacing may be enough. When it is broken across several panels, or the base has washed out, we take it out, fix the cause and pour again on a recompacted granular base. We tell you which after we see it. Stamped or coloured finishes are on our stamped and decorative concrete page.

Questions

Straight answers

We want a gazebo on our Fonthill patio. What do you need to know?

The gazebo footprint, the post locations and how it anchors, before we pour. Then we match the base, reinforcement, edge thickness and anchors to the structure, and quote the patio and gazebo slab as one job.

Part of our new East Fonthill backyard turns to mud every spring. Will a patio fix it?

Sometimes. If the mud is foot traffic on low ground, a graded patio on a compacted base solves it. If water collects there from the roof or a neighbour's grade, concrete only hides the problem. On a new lot, we also wait until the builder sets the final grade, often after the first spring. We tell you which case is yours at the site visit.

Our old Fonthill patio has sunk at one side. Repair or replace?

It depends on what moved. Minor settlement and a worn surface can often be repaired or resurfaced. If the slab is broken across several panels or the base has washed out, a new pour on a recompacted base is the honest answer. We tell you which after the site visit.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Fonthill?

The finish and how easily the truck reaches your backyard move the price most, then the size and the base the lot needs. Tight access adds labour, because the mix has to be pumped or wheelbarrowed in. We do not post a flat number. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
