A patio is a drainage job that happens to be a nice place to sit. In New Hamburg, the ground under the backyard decides how much work that drainage takes. Up out of the river valley, the town sits on moraine sand and farm loam. Down by the Nith River, the water table is higher and the ground stays wet longer.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what New Hamburg's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
Backyards near the Nith River
The low ground along the Nith carries a higher water table than the streets above it, and foundations near the water already take on more damp. A patio there must not add to it. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts empty before the forms go in.
If the yard already puddles against the house, the honest answer may be regrading before any concrete, or a patio set higher than you pictured. If your basement is damp now, look at our basement waterproofing page too, because a new patio will not fix water that is already coming in.
Sand and loam up top: protect the edges
Sand and loam drain better than the clay counties to the south. The trade is that sandy ground washes out where water runs over it. Every patio sends its runoff off its edges, so on New Hamburg ground we contain the base along those edges and plan where the water lands.
New surveys and heritage backyards
In the newer subdivisions on the edges of town and toward Baden, the patio is often the first pour the homeowner adds after the builder leaves. Downtown, around the waterwheel, the core is a Heritage Conservation District. A backyard patio there can still suit an old house: a plain broom finish or exposed aggregate sits quietly beside old brick and stone.
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after 7 days, and we seal it at about 28 days.
Straight answers
We live near the Nith River. Does that change the patio?
It can. The low ground by the river holds a higher water table, so the slope away from your foundation matters more. We set the patio about 2 percent away from the house, check where the downspouts empty, and look at the lot before we quote.
Does New Hamburg's sandy ground make a patio easier or harder?
Moraine sand and loam drain better than clay. But sandy ground washes out where water runs over it, so we compact a granular base, contain the edges, and keep runoff from digging under the slab.
Can a patio in the heritage downtown look right beside an old house?
Yes. We suggest a finish that sits well on an old street, such as a plain broom finish or exposed aggregate, and keep the patio in proportion with the house.
How much does a concrete patio cost in New Hamburg?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, and the base the ground needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work costs more. If the concrete truck cannot reach the forms, the crew moves the mix by pump or wheelbarrow, and the quote names that. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
