New Hamburg is a Wilmot town on the Nith River, and the core around the river is a designated Heritage Conservation District. Beyond the old core, newer subdivisions have spread out toward Baden. Repair work here runs from century-old steps and foundations downtown to the first settling cracks in newer driveways.

Most of that concrete does not need to come out. A crack can be injected, a sunken step lifted or rebuilt, a worn surface ground and resurfaced. The full method for each is on our concrete repair and resurfacing page. This page is about what New Hamburg's ground and older streets change about the job.

Repairs that suit a heritage downtown

In the heritage district, the repair should look like it belongs. We match new work to the brick, stone and proportions already on the street, and we rebuild worn steps to their original lines instead of setting a bright new slab beside a century house.

Where steps or walks are still sound underneath, we grind and resurface the worn treads and rebuild broken edges. Where they have sunk or the base has failed, we re-support them or form and re-pour on a compacted base. The written quote tells you which one your concrete needs.

Sandy ground, river water and why slabs move

Sand and loam drain better than the clay counties to the south, so a New Hamburg slab usually heaves less. The trade is that edges and steps need their bases contained, so runoff does not wash the support out from under them. Freeze-thaw swings and road salt then do the rest.

Down near the Nith the water table is higher, and foundations take on more damp. So a New Hamburg repair starts underneath: we check the base, the grade and where the downspouts send their water before we quote.

When the crack is a foundation or parging question

A crack in a walk or a garage slab is a repair job. A damp basement wall near the river, or a foundation whose parging has let go, is a different question. For those, see our basement waterproofing work.

Questions

Straight answers

Should I repair or replace the cracked concrete at my New Hamburg home?

It depends on the base. Repair wins when the damage is local and the base under it is still sound: one or two cracks, a step that settled on one side, surface pitting or a broken edge. Replacement wins when the slab has cracked all over, the base has failed across the whole area, or the surface has scaled so deep there is nothing sound to bond to. The written quote says which side of that line your concrete is on, and why.

Can you repair steps on a heritage-district house instead of replacing them?

Often, yes. If the steps are still sound underneath, we can grind and resurface worn treads and rebuild broken edges to their original lines. If they have sunk or the base has failed, we re-support them or pour new steps on a compacted base.

How much does concrete repair cost in New Hamburg?

There is no honest flat rate. The cost moves with the size of the area, how far the damage goes, the condition of the base, access and the season. The visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
