New Hamburg is a Wilmot town on the Nith River, and the core around the river is a designated Heritage Conservation District. Old foundations are part of what makes that streetscape, and the parging on them takes the weather every year.

Parging is a sacrificial skin. It takes the snow piled against the wall, the salt off the street and the meltwater running down the face, so the wall behind it does not have to. Once it fails, the wall behind starts taking that damage instead.

The full method, the bonding agent and the mesh where the wall calls for it, is on our parging page. This page is about what New Hamburg's older streets and river ground change about the job. The quote is free and written, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.

Re-parging a heritage-district foundation

In the downtown core, a re-parge should look like it belongs on the street. We match the finish to the foundation and the brick or stone above it, and we do not patch a century wall with a bright, flat new coat.

A coat that has had decades of winters cracks, sounds hollow and comes away. Water gets into every gap behind it, freezes and pushes the parge off in plates. A quick skim over what is left leaves the weak spots in place, so we sound the whole band and take the loose material off first.

What the Nith River ground changes

The low ground along the Nith carries a higher water table than the streets above it, so foundations down near the river take on more damp. That damp can reach the back of the coat even where the soil drains fast.

Up out of the valley the ground runs to sand and loam, which drains better than clay. The catch is concentrated runoff: a downspout that dumps at the same spot can wash the ground out beside the wall. We look at where the water goes before we look at the coat.

Older blocks and newer surveys

On the older blocks near the river, the job is usually a re-parge: strip, bond and recoat the exposed band. We write the scope down so you know what is being done and where it stops.

In the newer subdivisions toward Baden, if a coat has cracked or lifted early, we find out whether it is a thin coat or a poor bond.

How we re-parge a New Hamburg wall

Prep decides the result. The crew sounds the exposed band and strips every hollow, cracked or loose section back to material that holds, then cleans off dust, old paint and anything the new mortar cannot grip. The wall gets dampened and a bonding agent goes on. Where the coat crosses patches or a change of material, mesh ties it together so it does not crack along the seam.

We parge above 5°C with a frost-free cure, roughly mid-April to October, because a late job that freezes before it cures fails by spring. If your wall is shedding parge this fall, get the quote now and book the work for a safe window.

Parging or a water problem?

Parging is a weather skin, not waterproofing. It sheds rain and protects the wall above grade. It will not stop water coming through the foundation below grade. If moisture pushes out from behind the coat, if the same crack opens again through every recoat, or if the basement inside is damp, a fresh coat on its own will not fix it.

When that is the case, the crack or the drainage gets handled first and the parge goes on last. We do both, so we have no reason to sell you the wrong one.

Questions

Straight answers

The parging on my New Hamburg foundation keeps flaking off. Why?

Parging fails when new cement is troweled over a damp, dusty or crumbling wall and never bonds. We take the loose material right off, work out where the water is coming from, and lay a fresh coat with a proper mix and a real cure.

My house is in the heritage district. Can you re-parge it to suit?

Yes. We match the finish to the foundation and the brick or stone above it so the repair reads right on the street. We write the scope on the quote so you can see exactly what is being redone.

Will new parging fix my damp basement near the Nith?

No. Parging is a weather skin above grade, not waterproofing. If water gets in through the foundation below grade, a new coat will not stop it. That water problem gets fixed first, through our basement waterproofing or foundation repair work, and the parge goes on as the last step.

Can you still parge this fall?

Parging needs temperatures above 5°C and a frost-free cure, which here is roughly mid-April to October. A coat that freezes before it cures fails by spring, so we do not rush a late job. Send the form now and you get a free written quote, and the work goes into the next safe window.

How much does parging cost in New Hamburg?

There is no honest flat rate, because the cost is mostly prep. A sound wall that needs a fresh coat is the small end. A wall that sheds old parge in sheets, or has paint that must all come off first, takes more work. The height of the exposed band, whether the wall needs mesh, and the access on your lot all change it too. The quote is free and in writing, with the prep spelled out, and we reply within one business day.
