Concrete Walkways & Steps in New Hamburg

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porch slabs in New Hamburg, from heritage entrances in the downtown by the Nith River to new lots in the surveys toward Baden. Steps sit on footings below the frost line where they meet the house, and every walkway goes on a compacted granular base with its edges contained so runoff does not wash the sandy ground out from under it. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A walkway or a set of steps is where New Hamburg's ground shows first. Up out of the river valley the town sits on moraine sand and farm loam, which drains well but washes out where water runs over it. Down by the Nith River the water table is higher and the ground stays wetter. Either way, an entrance that settles leaves a gap and a trip hazard at the door.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway on a compacted granular base and the footings below frost depth, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what New Hamburg's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice.

Sandy ground: contain the edges

Sand and loam drain better than the clay counties to the south, so a New Hamburg walkway heaves less than one on heavy clay. The trade is that sandy ground washes out where water runs over it. A walkway sheds its runoff off the edges, so we compact a granular base and contain the base along those edges.

Steps and the Nith River damp

The low ground along the Nith carries a higher water table than the streets above it, and foundations near the water already take on more damp. A step that tips away from the door opens a gap that sends more water down the foundation wall. New steps go on footings below the frost line, or tie into the structure, rather than onto loose backfill beside the foundation.

If your basement is damp now, look at our basement waterproofing page too. New steps will not fix water that is already coming in.

Heritage downtown entrances and newer surveys

The downtown around the Nith and the waterwheel is a designated Heritage Conservation District. There we rebuild worn steps to their original lines, so the entrance reads right beside the old brick and stone instead of announcing itself.

In the newer subdivisions on the edges of town and toward Baden, a worn or failed walkway or front step can be replaced without redoing the whole entrance. Concrete replaces cleanly at the joints, so a single failed panel can be cut out and poured new. Foot traffic can go on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours, and we seal at about 28 days.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did my front steps in New Hamburg sink or tip away from the door?

Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, or on sand that water has washed out from under them. Backfill keeps settling for years while the house stays put on footings. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.

Can you rebuild steps on a heritage home in downtown New Hamburg?

Yes. We rebuild worn steps to their original lines and keep the work in proportion with the house and the street, so it suits the brick and stone around it.

Does New Hamburg's sandy ground make a walkway easier or harder?

Sand and loam drain better than clay, so heaving is less of a problem. But sandy ground washes out where water runs over it, so we compact a granular base, and contain the edges.

What does a walkway or steps job in New Hamburg cost?

It depends on the size of the job, the number of risers and how tall the steps stand, whether they need footings, the finish, access and what has to be torn out. The only number worth trusting is a free site visit and a written quote. The number we quote is the number on the invoice unless the job changes.
