The ground changes the job. The Nith River runs through town, and the low ground along it carries a higher water table than the streets above. Up out of the valley the ground is moraine sand and farm loam, which drains better than clay. Sand also washes out where water runs over it.

Near the Nith River: drainage first
Foundations near the river already take on more damp, so a decorative slab must not add to it. We check where the downspouts empty and slope the surface away from the house before the forms go in. If the yard already puddles against the wall, the honest answer may be regrading first.

Sand and loam up top: keep the edges from washing out
On sandy ground the weak point is the edge. Runoff that lands beside a patio can carry sand away grain by grain. So we compact the granular base, contain the edges and plan where the roof water goes.
The slab is built to the same standard as any flatwork we pour, with a compacted granular base and a 32 MPa air-entrained mix. Control joints are saw-cut along the pattern's grout lines, so shrinkage cracks follow lines that were meant to be there.
Choosing a pattern for a heritage street or a new survey
Downtown around the Nith and the waterwheel is a Heritage Conservation District. Quieter patterns sit best beside old brick and stone: ashlar slate or random flagstone in a colour matched to the brick or trim. In the newer surveys there is more room for cobblestone or a wood-plank border around a broom field.
Colour is kept with a resealing schedule. We seal the finished surface and give you the resealing plan in writing before you sign. If you want the look without that upkeep, we will explain exposed aggregate as an alternative.

Does stamped concrete suit a house in New Hamburg's heritage district?

Does sandy ground make stamped concrete crack?
Not because of the sand itself, which drains well and heaves less than clay. The risk is runoff washing sand out from under a slab edge. We answer that with a compacted granular base, contained edges and drainage that keeps roof water off the slab perimeter.
Does stamped concrete need to be resealed?
Yes. Decorative concrete holds its colour with a resealing schedule, and we put that schedule in writing. The first coat of sealer, with an anti-slip additive, is part of the job.
