Concrete Patios in Delhi, Norfolk County
We pour concrete patios in Delhi, built for the deep Norfolk sand the town sits on. Sand drains fast and seldom heaves, but it washes out from under a slab wherever water runs in one place, so a Delhi patio starts with a compacted granular base, contained edges and a slope away from the house. Quotes are free and written, the crews are union certified, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Delhi is the Norfolk County town at the crossing of Highways 3 and 59. Its streets carry storey-and-a-half brick and frame homes from the tobacco decades, a thin ring of newer builds, and farm properties starting where the town ends.
Every patio we pour is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, 100 mm thick, on a compacted granular base, sloped about 2 percent away from the house. The full method is on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Delhi ground and Delhi homes change about the job.
Deep sand: the risk is washout, not heave
Delhi sits on some of the deepest sand in Norfolk. Meltwater moves down through it instead of freezing in layers under the concrete, so slabs here seldom heave the way they do in clay country. The local failure is quieter: where a downspout, a swale or a slab edge puts water in one place, the sand is carried off grain by grain, until one corner has nothing under it and cracks.
So we never pour a patio straight on sand. We compact a granular base in lifts so it cannot migrate, contain the edges so runoff cannot mine out the perimeter, and check where your downspouts empty before the forms go in.
Slope away from block foundations
Delhi has a lot of mid-century block foundations. A patio beside one of them should move water away from the wall, not along it. We slope every patio about 2 percent away from the house, roughly a quarter inch per foot.
If your parging is already letting go or the basement takes water, say so at the site visit. The patio grade is part of the answer, and the rest is on our Delhi basement waterproofing page.
Freeze-thaw, finishes and rural yards
Sand does not stop freeze-thaw. Lake Erie keeps midwinter flipping across zero, so every patio gets air-entrained concrete. Broom finish gives grip, exposed aggregate adds texture, and stamped concrete adds pattern and colour.
Properties just outside town often want a shop floor or an equipment pad as well, and we can quote both at the same visit. Delhi books onto our western Norfolk route with Courtland and Langton, so a small patio rides a scheduled day.
Straight answers
The ground here is pure sand. Do you still put a gravel base under a patio?
Yes, every time. Sand drains well but it does not stay where you put it. Compacted granular over the sand gives the slab a stable base, and contained edges keep runoff from washing out the perimeter.
Can you replace an old cracked patio, or only pour new ones?
Both. We break out and haul away the old slab, fix what failed under it, and pour the new patio on a compacted base. Tear-out and disposal are in the written quote.
When can we use the new patio?
Foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after about 7 days, and we recommend a sealer at about 28 days.
