Stamped concrete suits both because it is one continuous surface, coloured and pressed to read as stone. There are no joints to weed and nothing to re-level piece by piece. In return it needs a sound base and a sealer coat kept up through the winters, and Ajax tests both: a clay plain by the lake and freeze-thaw that never lets up.

Where stamped concrete fits in Ajax

Ajax ground and the base under a stamped slab
Ajax has two grounds. Near the lake the land is a clay plain with a shallow water table, and further up the slope it is a stiffer clayey silt till. Both move with frost, and a stray crack shows more on a patterned face than on a plain broom finish. So the work that matters most is the work you never see: excavation, a compacted granular base, and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete made to take freeze-thaw and road salt.
On a new survey near Taunton or Salem, the backfill beside the house can keep settling for a year or two, so we check compaction before a stamped slab goes down. Control joints are cut along the grout lines of the pattern, so any shrinkage opens inside a seam your eye already reads as part of the stone. If a crack traces back to our workmanship, the lifetime warranty on labour brings us back to it. Hairline cosmetic cracks and normal wear are not covered, and the written quote spells that out.
Sealer, salt and the first winter
The colour on stamped concrete lasts only as long as the sealer over it. Lake Ontario winters bring wet snow, thaws and hard refreezes, and salt rides in on the cars. The acrylic sealer is reapplied every two to three years.
