Concrete Walkways & Steps in Mississauga
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Mississauga. On the older lakeshore streets in Port Credit, Lakeview, Clarkson and Lorne Park, worn and heaved steps on wet clay are the usual job. In the newer surveys up north, it is often steps or a path that settled on young fill beside the house. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Mississauga sits on clay. Along the lakeshore, below the old Lake Iroquois shoreline, it is clay and silt laid down in glacial lake water, with a water table that runs high near the Credit River and Lake Ontario. Inland and to the north it is the clay till of the Peel plain. Wet clay swells, and frost lifts whatever sits on it. Where a downspout empties beside the steps or a walkway, we check where that water goes. See our Mississauga page for everything else we do in the city.
The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Mississauga ground and Mississauga homes change about that job.
Lakeshore homes: steps that have been through decades of winters
In Port Credit, Lakeview, Clarkson and Lorne Park, many homes are on postwar lots, and their steps and walkways have been through decades of Ontario winters. On slow-draining clay, frost lifts a step that sits on shallow ground, and road salt carried in on boots wears the surface. The usual signs are a gap between the steps and the house, a landing that tips toward the door, and spalled treads.
New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or get doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. That stops them moving on their own as the ground freezes and thaws. We also look at where the downspouts empty, because water held against the steps is water held against the wall. If the wall already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Mississauga at the same visit.
Newer surveys: fill that is still settling
In Erin Mills, Meadowvale, Churchill Meadows and Lisgar, the fill around the house is younger and keeps settling for a season or two. A walkway or a set of steps poured on ground that is still moving can sink at the house edge and tip the wrong way, toward the wall.
So on a newer lot we check the compaction before we pour. A freestanding walkway floats on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top and a slope so water runs off it, not along its edge.
Repair, relevel or rebuild?
Not every worn or sunken step needs replacing. Steps that are sound but have settled can sometimes be lifted back into position once the water problem is fixed. A porch with spalled corners and a sound slab can often be resurfaced. Steps that are cracked through, or that have been taking water into their body for years, get rebuilt on proper footings.
We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each part, the steps, the walkway and the tear-out, so you can compare it with anyone else's. Mississauga sits east of our home routes, so jobs here book onto planned trips into the GTA with real dates, not a same-week promise. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps pulled away from the house in Port Credit?
On lakeshore clay, it is usually frost lifting steps that sit on shallow ground, or water from a downspout softening the clay beside them. The fix is steps on footings below the frost line, or doweled to the foundation, with the water moved away. We check both at the site visit.
Our builder's walkway in Churchill Meadows is sinking. What happened?
New subdivision fill keeps compacting for a season or two, and concrete poured on it can sink at the house edge. We check the compaction and the slope at the visit, and tell you whether to relevel, repair or rebuild.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Mississauga?
Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings, the drainage work and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost more than size does. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Can you rebuild the front walkway and steps together?
Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together, instead of making new work meet a failed piece. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately, so you see what each part adds.
