Concrete Walkways & Steps in Hamilton
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches across Hamilton, from old brick homes in the lower city to Mountain subdivisions. Steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line, because both halves of the city sit on clay that heaves in winter. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Hamilton is two cities split by the Niagara Escarpment, the Mountain. Up top, the ground is clay till over limestone bedrock. Below, the lower city sits on heavy lake-deposited clay and silt. Frost gets into both, and front steps feel it first.
The housing changes the job as much as the ground. The lower city holds pre-war brick houses on stone and early block foundations. The Mountain and the growth edges hold postwar streets and newer subdivisions.
The full method, footings, mix and thickness, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Hamilton entrance needs in particular. The site visit and the written quote are free.
Steps on clay need footings below the frost line
Your house sits on footings below the frost line. Front steps that only sit on the ground do not. On Hamilton clay they rise and drop each winter and pull away from the house, which opens a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings dug to about 1.2 metres, so they move with the house instead of the clay.
Built for salt and freeze-thaw
Hamilton winters bring lake-effect snow and road salt, and a front walk takes salt from boots and the street. We pour a compacted granular base and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the same exterior standard as our driveways, with a 100 mm (4 in.) walkway slab.
Straight answers
Why are my front steps in the lower city pulling away from the house?
Usually because they were never on footings below the frost line. Hamilton clay heaves when it freezes, so steps that only sit on the ground move each winter while the house stays put. Rebuilt steps get footings to about 1.2 metres, so they move with the house.
Does a Mountain home need a different walkway base than a lower-city one?
The method is the same: a compacted granular base under 32 MPa air-entrained concrete. On the Mountain, clay till over limestone heaves when frost gets under a thin base. In the lower city, the ground is lake-deposited clay and silt, and the homes are older.
Is the quote for Hamilton walkways and steps free?
Yes. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless the job changes.
