Concrete Patios in Hamilton

We pour concrete patios across Hamilton, from the Mountain subdivisions to the older backyards below the escarpment. Both halves of the city sit on clay, so we build each patio on a compacted granular base, slope it about 2 percent away from the house, and plan where its runoff goes before the forms go in. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Hamilton is two cities split by the Niagara Escarpment, the Mountain. Up top, the ground is clay till over limestone bedrock. Below, the lower city sits on heavy lake-deposited clay and silt, with a water table that runs high near the bay. Neither ground drains fast, and that is what decides how a Hamilton patio lasts.

A patio sends water off its edges every time it rains. On clay, that water stays close to the surface. If the patio is flat, or slopes toward the house, the water goes to the foundation. If the base is thin, frost lifts the slab in winter. So a Hamilton patio is won in the base and the grade, not in the concrete on top.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Hamilton's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.

Mountain clay and lower-city clay are different problems

On the Mountain, the worry is frost heave. Clay till holds water where frost can reach it under a slab on a thin base. In places the limestone sits close under the clay, so water does not always drain where you expect. We dig to stable ground, compact the granular base in lifts, and check at the site visit where the water on your lot really goes.

In the lower city, the worry is water at the house. The clay is heavy, the water table is higher near the bay, and many of the houses stand on old brick, stone or early block foundations. A patio that slopes toward one of those walls makes a wet basement worse. We slope the patio away from the foundation and plan where the downspouts and the runoff go, so the patio helps the basement instead of feeding it.

Old backyards below the escarpment, new ones on the Mountain

Lower-city lots are older and tighter. A new patio there often starts with taking out an old cracked slab, and the concrete truck often cannot reach the backyard, so the crew moves the mix by pump or wheelbarrow. We plan the access route at the site visit, protect the lawn, gardens and fence along it, and put the tear-out and the access in the written quote.

Up on the Mountain and at the growth edges, the patio is often the job the builder left for the homeowner. A new lot can keep settling for a while after the build, and a slab poured on ground that is still moving cracks early. We check the ground before we commit to a pour.

Finish, cure and when to book

Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters.

Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after about 7 days, and we seal it at about 28 days. Hamilton is at the top of our Highway 6 routes, so patio jobs book into the regular schedule through the pouring season. Ask for a quote in spring if you want the patio ready for summer.

Questions

Straight answers

Does a patio on the Hamilton Mountain need a different base than one in the lower city?

The method is the same, but the risk is different. On the Mountain, clay till over limestone heaves when frost gets under a thin base, so depth and compaction come first. In the lower city, the heavy clay and the higher water table near the bay make the slope away from the house and the runoff plan the main work. We build the base to the ground we find at the site visit.

Our lower-city house has a wet basement. Can a new patio make it better or worse?

It can do either. A patio that slopes toward an old foundation sends rain and melt straight at the wall. A new patio sloped about 2 percent away from the house, with the downspouts and runoff planned, moves that water away. If the basement already leaks, we can look at the wall too; see our basement waterproofing page for Hamilton.

The truck cannot get into our backyard. Can you still pour a patio?

Yes. On tight lower-city lots, the crew moves the concrete by pump or wheelbarrow when the truck cannot reach the forms. We plan the access route at the site visit, protect what is along it, and the written quote names how the concrete gets in.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Hamilton?

Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, whether an old slab has to come out, and the base the ground needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work, borders and multiple levels cost more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
