Binbrook is a farm village that filled up with subdivisions. The house closes, the landscaping starts, and the front walk and steps get built or redone. Around the older village and the farms, the concrete is older.

The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Binbrook ground and Binbrook homes change about that job. For everything else we do in the village, see our Binbrook page.

Clay that holds water beside the steps

Binbrook sits on a flat clay plain that drains slowly. Snowmelt and spring rain sit in the ground instead of falling away. Steps and walkways feel it first, because they sit at the edge of the house where the soil was dug out and put back.

So the base and the slope get the attention. A freestanding walkway floats on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top and a slope so water runs off it, not along its edge.

New subdivisions: steps and paths on settling fill

The new surveys were built on former farm fields. The soil is disturbed, and the backfill along each foundation keeps settling for a season or two after a house closes.

On a new lot we check the compaction before we pour. Wait out the first season after the builder sets your final grade, and book in spring if you want a summer pour date.

Older village homes and farms: steps that have seen decades of winters

Around the original village and the farms beyond it, the concrete is older.

New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings about 1.2 metres down, or get doweled into the foundation wall. For the wall itself, see basement waterproofing in Binbrook.

Repair or rebuild?

For repair work, see concrete repair and resurfacing in Binbrook. We look at the steps at the free site visit and give you a free written quote.

Binbrook sits where our Haldimand and Hamilton routes meet, so jobs book into the regular weekly schedule through the season. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Why does settling fill matter for steps on a newer Binbrook home?

The backfill along a new foundation keeps settling for a season or two after the house closes, on top of slow-draining clay. New steps that attach to the house get footings about 1.2 metres down, or are doweled into the foundation wall.

We just moved into a new Binbrook subdivision. When should we redo the walkway?

Wait out the first season after the builder sets your final grade. These surveys went in on old farm fields, and the fill along the foundation keeps settling. We check compaction before we pour. Spring is the time to book if you want a summer pour date.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Binbrook?

Steps are quoted by the job. Risers, height, footings and tear-out drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless the job changes.

Can you rebuild the front walkway and steps together?

Yes. We can quote the walkway and steps together as one job. The quote is free and written.
