Pad work in Waterdown follows the housing. Clay and settling fill: base first
Waterdown sits right on the escarpment edge, on clay over limestone. Clay heaves when frost gets under a slab on a shallow base, so what goes underneath matters more than the pour. On newer lots the ground is disturbed builder backfill that keeps settling for a season or two after closing.
We dig to stable ground and build 150 to 200 mm of compacted Granular A in lifts, deeper where soft or disturbed soil comes out. We do not set a pad on fresh ground. Garage floors and outdoor pads get 32 MPa air-entrained concrete.
Garage pads and shed pads on new lots
A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab: we thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh is the right choice there.
We match the pad height to your grade so water runs off it, away from the house and the garage. Most detached garages need a permit, and the fee varies by municipality. We flag it when we write the quote.
Ravine-edge lots and the old village
Lots near Grindstone Creek and the ravine drain toward the slope, so we plan where the runoff goes and keep the pad and its load back from any unstable bank.
In the old village around Mill Street and Dundas Street, an old cracked pad has to come out before a new one goes in. Our concrete removal and demolition crew handles the tear-out and haul-away.

It can. Lots near the ravine and the escarpment edge drain toward the slope, so the grading is where the extra care goes. The base and the pour are normal work; the runoff has to shed away from your house and the ravine.
