Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Tillsonburg
We pour shed pads, hot tub pads and detached garage slabs across Tillsonburg. The town sits on sandy ground that drains fast but washes out, so most of the work on a pad goes into the base: edges that hold it in, compaction in lifts, and roof water sent away from the slab. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A pad lives or dies below the surface. Tillsonburg sits on the north edge of the sand plain that made this the heart of the Ontario tobacco belt, with Big Otter Creek cutting its valley through town. Sandy loam drains well, so frost heave is less of a worry than in the clay towns to the north. The risk here is erosion: sand washes, and a pad can end up bridging a hollow.
The full build, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the compacted Granular A base, mesh or rebar by load, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page covers what Tillsonburg's ground and homes change. See our Tillsonburg page for everything else we do in town. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
Sandy ground: contain the base, steer the water
A detached garage pad in Southern Ontario is usually a floating slab, with no deep foundation, so the whole pad sits on its base. On Tillsonburg sand, that base has to stay put. We contain the edges so the base cannot wash out sideways, compact it in lifts instead of all at once, and thicken the perimeter where the walls will sit.
Near the slopes of the Otter valley this matters double. We also look at where the downspouts empty before we set the slope. A downspout that dumps beside a pad is often what cuts the hollow under it in the first place.
Newer surveys: the pad the builder left out
New surveys at the edges of town have kept builders busy, and the finishing pours come once the landscaping stage arrives: a shed pad at the back of the lot, a hot tub pad, a detached garage slab.
A hot tub pad has to be level and reinforced for the load, because a filled tub with people in it is heavy. We pour it a little larger than the tub's footprint so the steps and service panels land on concrete. On a new lot, soft or disturbed soil near the house needs deeper excavation and more granular fill, and we tell you at the site visit what the ground needs.
Older streets and Hickory Hills: steps, walks and pads that have aged
Hickory Hills has been selling adult-lifestyle homes since 1986, and Baldwin Place followed on the west side in 2001. Homes that age are now decades past their build dates, which is when original steps, walks and driveways start to fail, and a pad behind the house is a fair thing to look at on the same visit.
If an old pad is in the way, concrete removal is its own job, covered on our concrete removal and demolition page. The new pad then gets the same excavation to stable ground and compacted base as any other, and the written quote says what is included.
Garage floors, sheds and salt
A shed pad takes welded wire mesh. A garage or shop floor carries a vehicle, so it gets a 10M rebar grid at a 400 mm spacing and a slab 125 to 150 mm thick. A light resin shed does fine on a compacted gravel pad, and we will say so at the visit rather than sell concrete you do not need.
Road salt and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on a garage floor, so we pour air-entrained mix and slope the floor toward the door so melt off the car finds its way out.
Straight answers
Does Tillsonburg's sandy soil change how you build a garage pad?
It changes the prep more than the pour. Sand compacts well and drains fast, which is good, but it erodes. The base has to be contained at the edges and roof water has to be sent away from the pad. Skip that, and a corner can end up hanging over a washed-out hollow within a few springs.
Do I need concrete for a shed in Tillsonburg, or will gravel do?
A light resin shed does fine on a compacted gravel pad, and we will tell you so. Concrete is the right answer once the shed is a workshop, stores anything heavy, or needs anchoring against wind.
Can you replace an old pad behind a home in Hickory Hills?
Yes. Old concrete comes out as its own job, the ground is excavated to stable ground, the base is compacted and the new pad is poured. The written quote says exactly what is included before work starts.
How much does a concrete garage pad cost in Tillsonburg?
Size, thickness, the reinforcement the load needs, access to the site and the base the ground needs all move the number. A garage floor costs more than a shed pad because it is thicker and carries more steel. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
