Concrete Patios in Tillsonburg
My Concrete Pros pours concrete patios, gazebo slabs and pool decks across Tillsonburg. The town sits on sandy ground that drains fast but washes out, so most of our work here goes into the base: edges that hold it in, compaction in lifts, and roof water sent away from the slab. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Tillsonburg sits on the north edge of the sand plain that made this the heart of the Ontario tobacco belt, with Big Otter Creek cutting its valley through town. That ground decides more about a patio here than the finish you pick. See our Tillsonburg page for everything else we do in town.
A patio is a drainage job that is also a nice place to sit. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house, use 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for the freeze-thaw winters, and put it on a compacted granular base. The full method and specs are on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Tillsonburg ground and Tillsonburg homes change about that job.
Sandy ground: the base is the job
Sandy loam drains fast, so there is less frost heave here than in the clay towns to the north. The catch is erosion. Sand washes, and a patio slab can end up bridging a hollow where runoff has carried the base out from under it. Near the slopes of the Otter valley, that matters even more.
So on a Tillsonburg patio we spend the prep time where it counts. We contain the edges so the base cannot wash out sideways, compact the base in lifts instead of all at once, and look at where the downspouts empty before we set the slope. A downspout that dumps beside the slab is often what cuts the hollow in the first place.
Older homes: replace the settled patio, and fix the cause
Hickory Hills has been selling adult-lifestyle homes since 1986, and Baldwin Place followed on the west side in 2001. Many of those patios, and the walks and steps that lead to them, are now decades old. When an old slab has dropped at one corner or tipped toward the house, the base under it has usually washed or settled.
Pouring new concrete on the same base just buys a few more years of the same problem. We find out why the slab moved, rebuild the base, and set the new patio to fall away from the house. For an older owner, a level patio with a safe step down from the door is the point of the job, so we plan the step and the walk with the patio when they need it.
Newer surveys: the patio the builder left out
New surveys at the edges of town have kept builders busy. A first patio is a common job there, often with a stamped finish once the landscaping stage arrives.
On a new lot, the ground beside the foundation is backfill, and it can keep settling after the house goes up. We check the compaction on the site visit and tell you if the lot is ready to pour. If you plan a gazebo on the patio, bring the plan, and we build the base, reinforcement and edge thickness for it.
Straight answers
Does Tillsonburg's sandy soil change how a patio gets built?
It changes the prep more than the pour. Sand compacts well and drains fast, which is good, but it erodes. The base has to be contained at the edges and roof water has to be sent away from the slab. Skip that, and a corner can end up hanging over a washed-out hollow within a few springs.
Our old patio in Hickory Hills has sunk at one corner. Can you fix it?
Yes. A sunken corner usually means the base under it washed out or settled. We find the cause, rebuild the base, and pour a new slab that slopes away from the house. If the step from the door or the walk has moved too, we can fix them in the same job, and the written quote says exactly what is included.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Tillsonburg?
Size, the finish you pick, the base the soil needs and how easily the concrete truck can reach the backyard set the price. We do not post a flat number, because it would mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
How soon can we use the new patio?
Walk on it after 24 to 48 hours. Give it about a week before furniture or the barbecue, and about 28 days before sealing.
