Concrete Walkways & Steps in Tillsonburg

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Tillsonburg, from settled steps in Hickory Hills and Baldwin Place to a new front path in a newer survey. The town sits on sandy ground that drains fast but washes out, so the work goes into the base: contained edges, compaction in lifts and downspouts aimed away. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Front steps and the path to the door are the concrete Tillsonburg homeowners use every day. A step that has settled or a walkway slab that rocks is a real hazard, and more so for the many residents who are 65 or older. See our Tillsonburg page for everything else we do in town.

Hickory Hills has been selling adult-lifestyle homes since 1986 and Baldwin Place followed on the west side in 2001, so many original steps and walks there are now 25 to 40 years old. Newer surveys at the edges of town have different jobs: a wider front walk, a side path or a landing the builder never included. We quote both in writing, from one step to a full entrance rebuild.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway, the footings and the riser heights, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Tillsonburg's ground and homes change.

Sandy ground: the base is the job

Tillsonburg sits on the north edge of the sand plain that made this the heart of the Ontario tobacco belt, with Big Otter Creek cutting its valley through town. Sandy loam drains fast, so there is less frost heave here than in the clay towns to the north. The catch is erosion. Sand washes, and a walkway panel can end up bridging a hollow where runoff has carried the base out from under it.

So we contain the edges, compact the base in lifts and look at where the downspouts empty before we set the slope. Near the Otter valley slopes this matters even more. Steps that attach to a house still get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down.

Settled steps in Hickory Hills and Baldwin Place

Homes in Hickory Hills date from 1986 and in Baldwin Place from 2001, so many original steps and walks there are 25 to 40 years old. The written quote says exactly what is included before work starts.

Newer surveys: the walk the builder left out

New surveys at the edges of town have kept builders busy. A wider front walkway, a side path to the backyard or a landing is common work there.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Tillsonburg's sandy soil change how a walkway or steps get built?

It changes the prep more than the pour. Sand compacts well and drains fast, which is good, but it erodes. The base has to be contained at the edges and roof water sent away from the slab, or a panel can end up hanging over a washed-out hollow within a few springs.

Can you rebuild settled front steps in Hickory Hills or Baldwin Place?

Yes. Homes there date from 1986 and 2001 onward, so many original steps and walks are now 25 to 40 years old. The written quote says what is included before work starts.

Can you add a walkway to a newer Tillsonburg lot?

Yes. A wider front path, a side path to the backyard or a new landing are all walkway work we can quote.
