Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in St. George

We pour garage pads, shed pads and hot tub slabs in St. George: on the new lots in St. George Village and StoneyRidge, behind the older homes off Main Street, and on the farm properties along the concession roads. The village sits on clay that holds spring water and lifts a thin slab in a hard frost, so every pad gets a compacted granular base and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

St. George sits up on the clay plain, not in a river valley. The clay is slow to drain, so snowmelt and spring rain soak the ground for weeks. When frost drives deep, that wet clay grips a slab and lifts it. A pad poured on uncompacted ground rarely stays flat.

The full spec, from thickness and reinforcement to base depth and cure time, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page is about what a St. George pad needs in particular.

Clay that holds the spring melt

Water that cannot drain sits where frost can reach it. When it freezes under a pad, it lifts or tilts the pad. So we dig out to firm ground, compact a granular base in layers, and grade the pad so melt runs off it and away from the building beside it.

Outdoors and on garage floors we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix built for freeze-thaw and the salt that drips off a parked car.

New lots in St. George Village and StoneyRidge

The usual call from a new build is a shed pad, a hot tub slab or a detached garage floor, the things the builder leaves out. The reinforcement follows the load. A shed or hot tub pad takes welded wire mesh. A garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid and thicken the edges where a floating pad carries walls.

Farm and shop slabs on the concession roads

Past the village limits, slabs work harder. Tractors and trailers cross them, and equipment sits on them for months. Where equipment will sit or cross, we thicken the slab to five inches and add reinforcement.

Open-field wind also cools a late-fall pour faster than in town. If a November cold snap would beat the cure, we push the pour back a few days instead of risking the slab.

Before you pour a garage floor

A pad at grade and the floor of a garage are not the same job. Most detached garages need a building permit, and the rules differ by municipality. If your project needs one, we flag it at the quote; the permit fee is set by your town. Keep vehicles off a new slab for at least 48 hours.

Questions

Straight answers

Does clay under a St. George garage pad need a deeper base?

The base has to match the ground. The clay under the village holds water where frost can reach it, so a thin base lets the pad lift or tilt. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base in layers and grade the pad away from the building.

Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in St. George?

Rebar. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking and suits light pads like sheds and hot tubs, but a garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid.

Can you pour a pad on a farm property outside St. George?

Yes. Where tractors, trailers or other equipment will sit or cross, we thicken the slab to five inches with reinforcement and grade it so water sheds off. We quote it after a site visit.

How much does a garage pad cost in St. George?

Size, finish, base and soil, and how the crew gets in all drive the cost, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
