Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Port Colborne
We pour garage pads, shed pads, hot tub pads and shop slabs across Port Colborne, from the older lots in Humberstone and the West Side to the Sugarloaf and Lakeshore streets on Lake Erie and the rural edge toward Bethel and Sherkston. Inland the ground is tight Haldimand clay, near the canal the water table runs high after the melt, and on the lake the wind drives freeze spray onto the lots. So we build each slab on a dug-out, compacted granular base and pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A slab in Port Colborne sits on one of two kinds of ground, and sometimes both. Away from the water, the town is on the Haldimand clay plain. Clay holds water through a wet spring, and once frost works under a pad on a thin base, it lifts the pad and cracks it. Out on the Lake Erie shore the trouble moves to the surface: Erie is shallow, it freezes hard most winters, and the wind carries spray and ice onto the lakeshore lots.
The full spec, thickness, reinforcement and base depth, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page is about what Port Colborne's ground and homes change. See our Port Colborne page for everything else we do in town. The site visit and the written quote are free.
Clay inland, high water by the canal
Wet clay is what lifts a slab: water sits under the pad, freezes and pushes up. Thicker concrete does not fix that. Depth and drainage do. We dig to stable ground, build the granular base up in compacted lifts, and shape the ground and grade around the pad so melt and rain run away from it, not under it.
Near the canal and the low harbour ground, the water table sits high after the spring melt. On those lots we plan where the water goes before a form goes in: the grade, where the downspouts empty, and how the pad's own runoff leaves the yard.
Garage floors and shop slabs on the rural edge
Toward Bethel and the Sherkston end of town, we size the base, the slab and the steel to what will sit or park on it.
A garage floor is poured 125 to 150 mm thick and tied with a 10M rebar grid. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh suits it.
Lake Erie spray and winter salt on the floor
On Sugarloaf and the Lakeshore streets, the wind carries spray and ice off Lake Erie onto the lots, and a garage floor also takes the salt that drips off a parked car. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt.
Older lots and tear-out
In Humberstone, the West Side, East Village and downtown, the houses are older, and a new pad often starts with breaking out an old slab that has cracked or tipped toward the house. We take it out, fix what failed under it, and pour fresh. Our concrete removal page explains the tear-out.
Anchor bolts and a floor that slopes to drain go in on pour day. Port Colborne books into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season.
Straight answers
Will a concrete garage pad heave on Port Colborne's clay?
A good base cuts that risk a lot. Clay holds water, and water frozen under a slab on a thin base is what lifts it. We dig to solid material and compact a granular base in lifts, so water does not sit under the pad.
Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in Port Colborne?
Rebar for a garage floor: we tie a 10M rebar grid under a 125 to 150 mm slab. Welded wire mesh suits lighter pads like sheds and hot tubs.
Can you pour a shop slab or trailer pad toward Bethel or Sherkston?
Yes. We size the base, the slab and the steel to what will sit or park on it, and we give you a free written quote after the site visit.
We live on the Lake Erie shore. Does the spray hurt a garage floor or pad?
It can. The wind carries spray and ice off the lake onto lakeshore lots through the winter, and a garage floor also takes road salt off parked cars. The answer is air-entrained 32 MPa concrete.
How much does a garage pad cost in Port Colborne?
The size of the pad, how the crew gets in, whether an old slab has to come out and what the ground needs all set the number, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
