Port Colborne has two kinds of old concrete. The canal-side and inland streets, Humberstone, the West Side, East Village and downtown, hold older housing with steps, walks and driveways poured well before current base standards. The Sugarloaf and Lakeshore streets hold lakeside flatwork that has taken years of Lake Erie spray and ice. See our Port Colborne page for everything else we do in town.
The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Port Colborne ground and homes change about that job.
Clay and high water: find out why the old slab moved
Inland, Port Colborne sits on the Haldimand clay plain, tight clay that holds water through a wet spring and heaves a slab on a thin base once frost works underneath. Near the canal and the low harbour ground, the water table sits high after the spring melt.
When an old driveway or walk has heaved or cracked, taking it out is the easy part. Once the concrete is gone, we look at the base under it and where the water goes. If the base held water, we dig it out, rebuild it with compacted granular in lifts, and grade it so melt leaves the site. A new slab on the same wet base would move the same way.
Canal-side streets and lakeshore lots: what comes out
On the older canal-side and Humberstone streets, we look first at whether the concrete is sound and stable. If it is, a bonded overlay may be a real option instead of removal; if it is not, it comes out.
On Sugarloaf and the Lakeshore streets, spray and ice from Lake Erie wear the surface of exposed flatwork. When a lakeside step or walk has lost its face, we break it out, check the footing and compaction under it, and rebuild on a base that is ready for the new pour. Harbour and lakeshore ground can be disturbed fill, so we check what is under the old slab before anything goes back.
Small jobs and tight access
Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open. See concrete driveways in Port Colborne and concrete patios in Port Colborne for what goes back in.
A small machine needs about a 36 inch gate. Where it cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why did my Port Colborne driveway heave, and will a new one do the same?
Port Colborne's clay holds water through a wet spring, and water held under a slab freezes and lifts it. When we take the old slab out, we check the base and the drainage, and fix what moved it before the new pour. A new slab on the same wet base would move the same way.
Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?
Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.
How much does concrete removal cost in Port Colborne?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
