Delhi sits on some of the deepest sand in Norfolk. Sand rarely heaves a slab, but it moves. So we excavate, compact a granular base in lifts and contain the edges before we pour. Garage floors get 125 to 150 mm of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on a 10M rebar grid, with the edges thickened to about 300 mm. Sheds and hot tubs get mesh. Sand washes out from under a pad edge
Where a downspout, a swale or a slab edge puts water in one place, sand is carried off grain by grain. In time one corner of the pad has nothing under it and cracks under its own weight. Pouring straight on sand is how that happens.
So the base is compacted granular, the edges are contained so runoff cannot mine out the perimeter, and the pad is graded to send water away from the house. We look at where the downspouts empty before we set a form.
Where a kiln, barn or old slab stood
Around Delhi, a pad on the footprint of a tobacco kiln or barn is a regular job. The old structure can leave footings, ash, loose backfill and soft spots that show through a new slab if they are ignored.

Garage floors, rural shops and planning the job
A garage floor wants anchor bolts set in the wet concrete and a gentle slope toward the door. The written quote names the reinforcement, the edges and the anchors, so you can compare it with any other quote.

The ground is pure sand. Do I still need a gravel base under a garage pad?
Yes, every time. Native sand drains well but does not stay where you put it. Compacted granular over the sand gives the pad somewhere stable to sit, and contained edges keep runoff from washing out the perimeter.
Rebar or mesh for a garage pad in Delhi?
Rebar for anything that carries a vehicle: a 10M grid at 400 mm, with thickened edges on a floating garage slab. Mesh is right for light pads like sheds and hot tubs. The written quote names the reinforcement.
