Sand does not heave a slab. It leaves it hanging.
Delhi sits on some of the deepest sand in Norfolk. Meltwater drains down through it instead of freezing in layers under the concrete, so slabs here rarely heave. The usual failure is quieter. Where a downspout, a swale or a slab edge sends water to one spot, the sand is carried off grain by grain, until one corner has nothing under it and cracks under its own weight.
That changes what we look for once the old slab is out. We check where the support was lost, where the downspouts empty and how the lot drains. If the base washed out, we compact new granular in lifts and contain the edges before any new pour. If concrete is not going back, we grade the space so water leaves it instead of running along the house.
Old steps, walks and kiln pads
Many Delhi homes are brick and frame places from the forties through the seventies, and their front steps, walks and parging are reaching the end of their life.
