Cayuga is a small town, and a slab here sits on ground that holds water. Away from the river the ground is the South Cayuga clay flats: level fields that pond in March and dry late. Near the river, the lower Grand floods low ground when the spring ice jams. A pad lasts only as long as the base under it drains.
The job also changes with the street. The newer streets at the edge of town bring first-pour work, such as a garage pad or a shed pad. In the older blocks, an old cracked pad often has to come out before a new one goes in.

Clay that holds water: why the base decides the pad
Tight clay does not let water drain away. When water stays under a slab, it freezes and lifts or tilts the pad. A pad poured on scraped topsoil does the same thing sooner.
On this ground we dig to stable ground, build a compacted Granular A base in lifts and grade the finished pad so melt leaves fast, away from the pad and away from the house. Where soft or disturbed soil comes out, the base goes deeper.
Garage pads for newer Cayuga streets
A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. We thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. Anchor bolts go into the wet concrete, and the floor slopes gently toward the door.
Most detached garages need a building permit. We flag it at the quote, and the fee is set by the municipality.
Shed and hot tub pads
Small pads get the same base as large ones. A hot tub pad is poured dead level and reinforced for the weight of a filled tub. A light resin shed can sit on a compacted gravel pad, and we will say so at the site visit. Concrete is the right answer once the shed is a workshop or holds anything heavy.
Salt and freeze-thaw
Highway 3 runs salt through the middle of town all winter, and a garage floor also takes the salt that drips off a parked car. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete outdoors and on garage floors, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt. The slab then gets a real cure before its first winter.
