Woodstock sits on clay and clay-loam ground that swells when wet and heaves when frost gets under a slab. That matters after a slab comes out: if the soil played a part in the failure, the base has to be looked at before anything new goes in. See our Woodstock page for everything else we do in town.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Woodstock ground and Woodstock homes change about that job.

The century streets: old driveways, settled steps and tight lots

North of Dundas Street, the blocks around Vansittart Avenue carry brick homes a century old or more, with driveways on their second or third life and front steps that have settled. A driveway poured decades ago rarely got the base depth used now, and clay heaves wherever frost can reach under the slab.

The old slab comes out first, then the base is rebuilt, then the new slab goes in on that proper base. See concrete driveways in Woodstock for what goes back in. Tight side yards and machine paths beside old brick are planned before the machine arrives, with jackhammers against the house and in tight yards.

Clay ground: rebuilding the base once the slab is out

Clay holds water, and when that water freezes under a slab it pushes. Once the old concrete is out, we look at what is left before anything is poured.

Because the same crew does the tear-out and the new pour, the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, compacted in lifts and graded for drainage. If nothing is going back in, we grade the space and top it with soil or gravel.

Newer surveys: pads, walks and what a builder left behind

Out at Havelock Corners and the Villages of Sally Creek, new-survey soil keeps settling for a season or two, so we check compaction before pouring anything.

Woodstock is one of our regular Oxford County stops, so small jobs like one walkway or a front step are welcome.

Questions

Straight answers

Our older Woodstock driveway is heaving and cracking. Does it have to be removed?

Age and clay, usually together. An older driveway rarely got the base depth used now, and Woodstock clay heaves wherever frost can reach under the slab. Once a panel lifts, water gets into the crack, freezes and widens it every winter. Past a certain point resurfacing stops making sense, and removal plus a new pour on a proper base is usually the better path. We look at it at the free site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in Woodstock?

Removal cost rides on three things: how thick the slab is, how heavily it is reinforced, and how a machine reaches it. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

What happens to the old concrete?

Old concrete goes to a recycler and comes back as road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled separately.
