Newmarket sits on two kinds of ground. The southern edge runs to Oak Ridges Moraine sand and gravel that drains fast. The lower north and west of town sit on heavy clay till, and the land toward the Holland River drops to lowland where the water table climbs after the spring melt. That changes what we find under an old slab and what has to be rebuilt before anything new goes in. See our Newmarket page for everything else we do in town.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Newmarket ground and Newmarket homes change about that job.

Historic Main Street: settled steps and tired aprons

The blocks around historic Main Street and Fairy Lake hold the oldest homes in town, many with original foundations, settled steps and parging that has started to let go. Where a step has settled or an apron has cracked, we scope the breakout at the free site visit and tell you straight what has to come out.

Clay, sand and low ground: rebuilding the base after the tear-out

On the clay in the lower north and west of town, frost can heave a pour and melt water sits against the ground for weeks. Once the old concrete is out, we check what is left underneath and rebuild the base in compacted lifts, graded to shed water, before anything new goes in. That is decided on site, lot by lot.

Toward the Holland River, the water table stays high after the melt. If an old slab sat on that lower ground, we read the lot before we promise a base. See concrete driveways in Newmarket and concrete patios in Newmarket for what goes back in.

Newer surveys: making room for the bigger pour

In newer surveys such as Stonehaven-Wyndham, Glenway Estates, Summerhill and Woodland Hill, removal is scoped lot by lot. Fresh-survey fill keeps compacting for a season or two, so we test the base before new concrete goes down.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open and you pay for one trip, not two. Newmarket is a long haul up the 400 and 404, so jobs book into planned trips with a real date, not a same-day call. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.

Questions

Straight answers

Does the base need to change after old concrete comes out on Newmarket clay?

Clay heaves when frost gets under a pour and holds melt water against it. We check what is left under the old slab, then rebuild and compact the base so the new slab drains. That is decided on site.

Do you come all the way up to Newmarket for a small tear-out?

Yes. Newmarket jobs are grouped into planned trips up the 400 and 404, and small tear-outs like one walkway or an old shed pad are booked in with the larger work. Book the site visit and we will tell you when a crew can be there.

How much does concrete removal cost in Newmarket?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
