Concrete Patios in Newmarket

My Concrete Pros pours concrete patios, gazebo slabs and pool decks across Newmarket. The ground sets the base: fast-draining moraine sand on the south edge of town, heavy clay till in the north and west. Beside the older homes around Main Street, the job is also about keeping water off an old foundation. Union-certified crews do the work, quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Newmarket has two kinds of ground and two ages of house, and a patio here depends on both. The south edge of town is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, sand and gravel that drains fast. The north and west sit on heavy clay till, the stony, silty soil that geologists named the Newmarket Till after this town. See our Newmarket page for everything else we do in town.

A patio is a drainage job that is also a nice place to sit. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house, use 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for the freeze-thaw winters, and put it on a compacted granular base. The full method is on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Newmarket ground and Newmarket homes change about that job.

Sand or clay: the base decides the patio

On the moraine sand, frost heave is the smaller worry. The bigger one is a base that shifts or washes out when water runs under the slab. We dig to stable ground and compact the base in lifts.

On the clay till, frost reaches under a shallow base and lifts the slab, and the clay holds meltwater for weeks. There we dig deeper, build a thicker compacted base and slope the patio so water leaves the slab and the house. We decide the base on site, after we see your ground.

Older homes around Main Street and Fairy Lake

The blocks around historic Main Street hold the oldest homes in town, many with original foundations and parging that has started to let go. A patio poured flat against one of these walls, or one that settles toward it, sends rain and spring melt straight to an old foundation.

Before we pour beside an older home, we look at where the downspouts empty, how the yard drains, and the state of the wall and the parging. If the parging is failing, we can redo it before the patio covers the bottom of the wall. Toward the Holland River the land is low and the water table climbs after the melt, so there we take extra care with the slope. If the basement already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing first.

Newer surveys, gazebos and planned trips

In the newer surveys, such as Stonehaven-Wyndham, Glenway Estates, Summerhill and Woodland Hill, fresh fill keeps settling for a season or two, so we usually tell you to wait through a full spring, then we check the base before we pour.

A pad that carries a gazebo is not ordinary patio space. Bring the gazebo plan to the site visit, and we plan the base, the reinforcement and the anchors for that structure, and quote the patio and the pad as one job.

Newmarket is a long drive north, reached by the 400 and 404, so we book patios here into planned trips and give you a real date, not a same-day truck. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Does a patio on Newmarket clay need a different base than one on sand?

Yes. On the moraine sand in the south of town, the base must be compacted so it does not shift or wash out. On the clay till in the north and west, it must be deeper so frost does not lift the slab. We decide the details on site after we see your ground.

Our home near Main Street is old. Will a new patio make the basement wetter?

Not if the patio is built right. We slope every patio about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts empty. If the parging is failing or the wall already lets water in, we tell you before we pour, so the patio does not go in on top of the problem.

We are in a newer survey. When can we pour a patio?

Give the lot a full spring first, so the ground has been through a freeze and thaw. Fresh fill keeps settling for a season or two, and a patio on ground that is still moving can crack or tip toward the house. We check the base before we pour.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Newmarket?

The size, the finish, the base your ground needs and how easily the truck can reach the backyard set the price. We do not post a flat number, because it would mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
