Ingersoll sits in the Thames valley on clay-loam ground that holds melt and rain. That matters after a slab comes out: the soil under it is the reason many slabs failed, so the base has to be looked at before anything new goes in. See our Ingersoll page for everything else we do in town.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Ingersoll ground and Ingersoll homes change about that job.

The plant-era streets: driveways and garage floors due for replacement

The subdivisions that followed the CAMI plant, which opened in 1989, are now 25 to 35 years old. That is the age when builder-grade driveways, garage floors and front walks come due, often on the same street at the same time. Hairline cracks that stay put are cosmetic. Joints that have heaved, dropped or widened year over year mean the base is finished.

When that is the case, the old slab comes out, the base is rebuilt, and fresh concrete goes in. See concrete driveways in Ingersoll for what goes back in. If only the surface is tired and the base is sound, concrete resurfacing may be the better answer, and we tell you which at the free site visit.

Clay-loam ground: rebuilding the base once the slab is out

Clay holds water, and when that water freezes under a slab it pushes. Many Ingersoll slabs that failed did so because the base under them was too thin for the ground. Once the old concrete is out, we look at what is left, dig to stable ground where needed, and compact granular in lifts before anything is poured.

Because the same crew does the tear-out and the new pour, the base is rebuilt while the ground is open and you pay for one trip, not two. If nothing is going back in, we grade the space and finish it with gravel or topsoil.

The older core and small jobs

The blocks around Thames Street hold Victorian and Edwardian brick. Settled front steps and old walks there are sometimes better levelled or rebuilt than torn out, and we say so rather than sell a tear-out you do not need. Machine paths near old brick and tight side yards are planned before the machine arrives, with hand breakout where it will not fit.

Ingersoll books into our regular Oxford County routes with Woodstock and Beachville, so small jobs like one walkway are welcome.

Questions

Straight answers

Our 1990s Ingersoll driveway is cracked at every joint. Does it have to be removed?

Not always. Hairlines that stay put are cosmetic. Joints that have heaved, dropped or widened year over year mean the base under the driveway is finished, and then removal and a rebuilt base is the honest answer. We look at it at the free site visit and quote both paths.

Can the old steps at my older Ingersoll home be repaired instead of removed?

Often, yes. Settled steps can sometimes be levelled or rebuilt rather than torn out. We tell you straight when a repair will hold and when replacing the piece is the better choice.

How much does concrete removal cost in Ingersoll?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
