Concrete Removal & Demolition in Elora

We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Elora. Near the gorge, the job is shaped by limestone close to the surface. Around the stone houses of the village core, it is shaped by tight lanes and old foundations beside the slab. Up on the higher ground, it is often a heaved slab on clay-loam coming out so the base can be fixed. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Elora is built where Irvine Creek meets the Grand River, and the gorge cuts more than twenty metres down through limestone and dolostone. That rock sits near the surface across much of the village, so what lies under an old slab matters as much as the slab. See our Elora page for everything else we do in town.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Elora ground and Elora homes change about that job.

Shallow rock near the gorge

When an old slab comes out in Elora, solid rock may be closer under it than you expect. That is normal here. It changes how deep the ground can reasonably be dug after the tear-out, and it is one more reason we look at the actual ground at the free site visit before we write the quote.

Near the Grand and the Irvine, melt and rain run along the seams in the limestone instead of soaking evenly away. If an old slab has been holding water against a house, we note where it goes before the slab is gone, so the regrade sends it away from the foundation.

The village core: stone houses and tight lanes

Around Mill Street, Metcalfe Street and the lanes near the river, the houses are cut stone and century brick, on foundations as old as the walls above them. Next to a wall like that, we saw-cut the edge and use jackhammers instead of a hydraulic breaker where the slab meets the house. Where the old driveway or step is also what cracked or lifted, we say so, and the fix goes into the quote before the new pour.

Lanes and gates in the old core can be narrow. We plan the machine path ahead of time so the lawn, the fence and the neighbour's side are spared, and the smallest machines fit through a 36 inch gate.

Higher ground: heaved slabs on clay-loam

The newer homes up away from the gorge mostly sit on drumlin clay-loam. Clay that holds water under a slab freezes and pushes it up, and a thin base lets it. When a heaved driveway or patio comes out, the work is not finished at the tear-out. We check the base that is left and fix it before anything new goes in.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one trip, not two. See concrete driveways in Elora and concrete patios in Elora for what goes back in. Elora books onto our regular Wellington County routes through the pouring season. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.

Questions

Straight answers

Will rock get in the way when the old slab comes out near the Elora Gorge?

It can. The limestone sits close to the surface across much of Elora, so solid rock may be near the underside of an old slab. That changes how deep the ground can be dug afterwards, which is why we look at the actual ground at the free site visit before we write the quote.

Can you break out a driveway or steps right beside our old stone house?

Yes. We saw-cut the edge where old concrete meets concrete or stone that stays, and use jackhammers instead of a hydraulic breaker against the house. We plan the machine path before the day, so the lawn and the fence are spared.

How much does concrete removal cost in Elora?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. Shallow rock near the gorge can change the work too. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
