Concrete Driveways in Elora

We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Elora, built for the ground the village sits on: limestone close to the surface near the gorge, and drumlin clay-loam on the higher ground that heaves a slab on a thin base. Union-certified crews do the work, the written quote is free and holds, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Elora is built where Irvine Creek meets the Grand River, and the gorge cuts more than twenty metres down through limestone and dolostone. That same rock sits near the surface across much of the village. On the higher ground away from the gorge, the soil is drumlin clay-loam, and that ground heaves a slab when frost works under a thin base.

So an Elora driveway starts with reading the ground at your address, not with the pour. The full spec, with the mix, the base and the joints, is on our concrete driveways page. This page is about what an Elora driveway needs in particular.

Shallow rock near the gorge

In a town with deep soil, a crew digs out a driveway to a set depth and builds the base up from there. In Elora, the dig can reach solid rock sooner than expected. That is normal here, and it changes how the excavation goes and how deep it can reasonably reach.

Rock also steers water. Near the Grand and the Irvine, melt and rain run along the seams in the limestone instead of soaking evenly away. We check where water goes before we set a form, and we grade the driveway so melt runs off the slab and away from the house.

Clay-loam on the higher ground

The newer homes up away from the gorge mostly sit on drumlin clay-loam. Clay that holds water under a slab freezes and pushes, and a thin base lets it. The fix starts below the slab: we excavate to stable ground, compact a Granular A base, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete that holds up to freeze-thaw and salt.

Where a truck or trailer parks, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.

Older homes in the village core

Around Mill Street, Metcalfe Street and the lanes near the river, the houses are cut stone and century brick. Replacing a driveway there often starts with breaking out the old slab and hauling it away, then fixing whatever cracked or lifted it before we pour fresh. We choose a finish that suits the house beside it.

Elora books onto our regular Wellington County routes through the pouring season, so a village driveway fits the weekly schedule.

Questions

Straight answers

We live near the Elora Gorge. Will rock get in the way of a new driveway?

It can, and it is better to expect it here. The limestone sits close to the surface across much of Elora, so a driveway dig can hit solid rock sooner than in a town with deep soil. That is not a problem in itself, but it changes how we excavate and build the base, which is why we look at the actual ground at the free site visit before we write the quote.

Our driveway on the newer side of Elora has heaved. What causes that?

Usually water held in the clay-loam under a thin base. When that water freezes, it pushes the slab up. We break out the old slab, fix the base with proper depth, compaction and drainage, and pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Elora?

Size sets the starting point, then the finish, the base your ground needs, access, and whether an old slab has to come out. Shallow rock near the gorge can change the excavation. We do not post a flat rate that would only mislead you. A free written quote comes after the site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
