Concrete Patios in Elora
We pour concrete patios across Elora, from a first backyard patio at a newer home on the higher ground to a stamped patio beside an old stone house near the river. Each one starts with the ground at your address: limestone close to the surface near the gorge, or clay-loam that heaves a slab on a thin base. Union-certified crews do the work, the written quote is free, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Elora is built where Irvine Creek meets the Grand River, and the gorge cuts more than twenty metres down through limestone and dolostone. That rock sits near the surface across much of the village. Away from the gorge, the newer homes mostly sit on drumlin clay-loam. A patio here depends on which of those two grounds your yard is on. See our Elora page for everything else we do in the village.
A patio is a drainage job that is also a nice place to sit. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house, use 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for the freeze-thaw winters, and put it on a compacted Granular A base. The full method and specs are on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Elora ground and Elora homes change about that job.
Newer homes on the higher ground: a base for clay-loam
Out past the historic core, newer homes have filled in on the higher ground away from the gorge. Many owners finish the yard a year or two after they move in, and a patio is often the first job.
The ground there is mostly drumlin clay-loam. Clay that holds water under a slab freezes and pushes, and a thin base lets it. So we put the patio on a compacted Granular A base and slope the patio away from the house so melt and rain do not sit under it.
Near the gorge: when the dig hits rock
In a town with deep soil, a crew digs a patio out to a set depth and builds the base up from there. In Elora, the dig can reach solid rock sooner than expected. That is normal here, and it changes how the excavation goes and how deep it can reasonably reach.
Rock also steers water. Near the Grand and the Irvine, melt and rain run along the seams in the limestone instead of soaking evenly away. Before we set a form, we check where the water goes, so the patio sheds it away from the house and does not send it to the foundation.
Old stone homes in the village core
Around Mill Street, Metcalfe Street and the lanes near the river, the houses are cut stone and century brick, on foundations as old as the walls above them. A patio poured against one of those walls must keep water off it. A slab that is flat, or that settles toward the house, sends every rain and every spring melt to an old foundation.
We choose a finish that settles beside the stone instead of glaring next to it. A plain broom finish suits many of these homes, and a stamped or decorative finish can give the patio a stone look. If the wall already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Elora before a patio goes in beside it.
Straight answers
We live near the Elora Gorge. Will rock get in the way of a new patio?
It can, and it is better to expect it here. The limestone sits close to the surface across much of Elora, so a patio dig can hit solid rock sooner than in a town with deep soil. That is not a problem in itself, but it changes how we excavate and build the base, which is why we look at the actual ground at the free site visit before we write the quote.
Our home is on the newer side of Elora. How do you stop a patio from heaving?
The fix is below the slab. The higher ground is mostly clay-loam, and water held in clay under a thin base freezes and pushes the slab up. We put the patio on a compacted Granular A base, slope the patio about 2 percent away from the house, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete.
Can a new patio suit our old stone house near the river?
Yes. We choose a finish that suits the stone, from a plain broom finish to a stamped finish, and we slope the patio away from the old foundation so it does not send water to the wall. If the wall already lets water in, we tell you before we pour.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Elora?
Size sets the starting point, then the finish, the base your ground needs, and access to the backyard. Shallow rock near the gorge can change the excavation. We do not post a flat number that would only mislead you. A free written quote comes after the site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
