Vaughan is two kinds of driveway job. In the older streets of Woodbridge and Thornhill, many driveways are on their second life, poured decades ago on a thinner base than we put down now. In the newer surveys through Maple, Concord and out toward Kleinburg, the builder often poured only the bare strip, and owners want it widened or finished properly.
Under both sits the ground, and in Vaughan the ground changes from south to north. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Vaughan driveway needs in particular.
Clay in Woodbridge and Thornhill: build against heave
Most of Vaughan sits on the clay till of the Peel plain. Clay swells when it is soaked, heaves when frost gets under a slab, and drains slowly. A driveway poured on a thin base here tends to lift and crack within a few winters. Once a panel lifts, water gets into the crack, freezes and pries it wider every year.
So on clay we dig to stable ground, compact a proper granular base, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix for slabs that live with freeze-thaw and road salt. Then we cut control joints where the slab wants to crack. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.
Sandier ground toward Kleinburg: contain the base
Toward Kleinburg, the land meets the Oak Ridges Moraine, which is glacial sand and gravel. It drains far faster than the clay to the south, so frost heave is the smaller risk. The bigger risk is the base washing out. There, we keep the base contained and grade the slab so water runs clear of it and of the house.
We decide the base on site, after we see your ground. A lot near the Humber valley and a lot on the high ground can need different prep.
Older driveways and new-build strips
Replacing an old Woodbridge or Thornhill driveway starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base that let it fail, and pour fresh. Past a point, resurfacing only buys a little time, and a new slab on a proper base is the better road.
On a new survey, the job is usually a wider drive, a side walkway or a garage pad the builder left out. Soil on a fresh lot keeps settling for a year or two after the house goes up, so we check the compaction before we pour.
Vaughan is reached by the 400 and the 407, so we group Vaughan jobs into planned trips and give you a real date. A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, so plan the pour around when you need the car.
Straight answers
Why does my older Woodbridge driveway keep heaving and cracking?
Usually it is age over clay. An older driveway rarely got the base depth we use now, and the Peel clay under Woodbridge heaves where frost reaches under the slab. Once a panel lifts, water gets into the crack and widens it each winter. Past a point, tearing it out and pouring fresh on a proper base is the better answer.
Does a driveway near Kleinburg need a different base than one in Thornhill?
It can. Toward Kleinburg, the moraine brings sandier ground that drains fast, so we contain the base so it cannot wash out and grade water away from the slab. In Thornhill, on heavier clay, frost heave is the risk, so the base is dug deeper and compacted hard. Every quote starts with a site visit for this reason.
We are in a new build in Maple. When can we widen the driveway?
Give the ground time to settle. Soil on a new survey keeps settling for a year or two after the house goes up, and that settling cracks a slab poured too early. We check the compaction before we pour anything.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Vaughan?
Size, finish, access, tear-out of an old slab and the base the ground needs set the number. A flat figure online would only mislead you. We give you a written number after a free visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
