Concrete Driveways in Milton

We pour new, widened and replacement concrete driveways across Milton, from the Mattamy-built surveys south of the 401 to the older streets around the Main Street core. The ground here is heavy clay till, and on a new lot it is builder fill that keeps settling for a season or two, so the base decides how long a driveway lasts. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Most Milton driveways sit on heavy clay till. Clay holds water, and when frost reaches under a slab poured on a thin base, it lifts. In the newer surveys there is a second problem: the ground next to the house is builder fill, trucked in and rough-graded, and it keeps packing down after the house goes up. A slab poured on fill that is still moving will move with it.

So a Milton driveway is decided in the base, not on pour day. We excavate to stable ground, compact a granular base in lifts by machine rather than trust fresh fill, grade so melt runs off the slab, and pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Milton driveway needs in particular.

New surveys: wait for the grade, then build the base

Hawthorne Village, Coates, Scott, Willmott, Ford and Cobban are new houses on filled, rough-graded lots.

Timing matters. Wait for the builder to set your final grade, and give a new lot a season to settle. When we pour, we check the backfill first and compact the base mechanically, so the slab does not follow the fill down. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.

Older homes near the Main Street core

Milton started as a mill settlement on Sixteen Mile Creek, and the brick and stone homes around the Main Street core are much older than the surveys. When an old driveway there has heaved or broken up, we take out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base and the drainage that let it fail, and pour fresh. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote.

Lots toward the escarpment

West toward Kelso, Rattlesnake Point and Mount Nemo, the clay thins out over limestone, with rock close to the surface in spots. That changes how deep a crew can dig before it reaches solid material. We check what your lot sits on at the site visit and build to the real ground, so the quote reflects it.

Milton books into our regular Halton schedule through the pouring season. A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, so plan the pour around when you need the car.

Questions

Straight answers

We just moved into a new Milton build. How soon can we replace the builder's driveway?

Wait until the builder has set the final grade, then give the lot a season to settle. Milton's surveys sit on builder fill over clay, and that fill keeps packing down for a year or two next to a new foundation. We check the backfill and compact the base by machine before we pour, because a slab on fill that is still moving will crack or sink with it.

Can you widen our Milton driveway instead of replacing all of it?

Often, yes. Widenings are regular work for our crews. We build the new section on its own excavated, compacted base, match its height to the old slab, and place the joint line between old and new so the addition looks deliberate. We tell you whether widening or a full replacement makes sense.

Will road salt flake a new concrete driveway in Milton?

Salt and freeze-thaw are hard on any surface here. The defence is air-entrained 32 MPa concrete: tiny air bubbles in the mix give freezing water room to expand, so the top does not flake away. Keeping salt off the slab in its first winter helps too.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Milton?

Size, finish, access, whether an old slab has to come out, and what the clay needs under it set the figure. A new-survey lot often needs the base built up before any concrete goes down, so a flat number posted online would only mislead you. A firm written quote comes after a free site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
