Concrete Walkways & Steps in St. George
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porch slabs in St. George, from century homes off Main Street to new lots in the subdivisions and farmhouses on the concession roads. The village sits on clay that holds water and heaves in a hard freeze, so we build every entrance on a compacted base with footings below the frost line where steps meet the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

The village sits up on the clay plain, not in a river valley, and that clay is slow to drain. Spring melt and rain soak the ground beside the house for weeks. When frost drives deep, the wet clay grips the concrete and lifts it. A walkway panel that was flat in the fall can stand proud of its neighbour by spring, and a set of steps can tip away from the door.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a St. George entrance needs in particular, and the free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.
Clay that holds water
The clay under the village does not let melt drain away, so it ponds in low yards and sits against the foundation. Steps poured onto loose backfill next to the house settle into that wet ground, then frost lifts them again each winter.
So we dig out to firm ground, compact a granular base in layers, and slope every walkway and tread so water runs off it and away from the house. Where new steps or a porch meet the house, they sit on footings below the frost line or tie into the structure, so the clay cannot move them away from the door.
Old entrances in the core and on the farms
The streets off Main Street mix century homes with postwar houses, and the concession roads around the village still have farmhouses on stone and rubble foundations from the 1830s.
On an old house, we take out the old steps, check what is under them, and build the new set on a proper footing. If the foundation wall behind the steps needs work, we tell you at the site visit, and we can parge the exposed wall in the same visit.
New lots in St. George Village and StoneyRidge
St. George Village and StoneyRidge are the newer subdivisions in the village. If your new home needs a walkway, steps or a landing, we build them on the same compacted base and footings as any other entrance.
Tell us the whole list at the site visit. Getting a crew and equipment to the site is a large part of the cost of a small pour, so a walkway poured in the same visit as a patio or a pad costs less than separate trips. You get one written quote for all of it.
Straight answers
Why did my front steps in St. George pull away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, and the clay under the village holds water. The backfill settles, and frost in the wet clay lifts and drops the steps each winter, so they tip away from the door. A gap opens that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
Is one set of steps too small a job to bring a crew to St. George?
No. St. George is on the same weekly Brant County route as Brantford and Paris, so a single set of steps or one cracked walkway panel gets a free written quote like a full driveway does.
How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in St. George?
It depends on the job. The size and number of steps, tear-out of the old ones, the footing and base the ground needs, the finish, and access to the entrance all change it. We give you a written number after a free site visit, and that number holds unless you change the job.
Can you rebuild the steps on an old farmhouse outside the village?
Often, yes. We rebuild steps and porch slabs on old farmhouses, including ones with stone and rubble foundations. If the wall behind the steps is bowing or its mortar has failed deep in the joints, we tell you that it needs a mason or an engineer first.
