Concrete Walkways & Steps in Acton
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Acton, from sunken steps on a brick home off Mill Street to a new front path on a newer street. Acton sits on clay till over limestone, with bedrock often close to the surface, so steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line and a compacted granular base. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Front steps and the path to the door are the concrete Acton homeowners use every day, and winter is hard on them. Higher, cooler ground near the watershed, freeze-thaw swings and road salt off Highway 7 all work on the surface and on what sits under it.
Acton splits two ways. Around Mill Street the brick and stone homes are well past a century old, and their front steps were poured generations ago, often on a thinner base than we use now. We also pour new walkways and landings for newer lots. We quote both in writing, from one cracked panel to a full entrance rebuild.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway, the footings and the riser heights, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Acton's ground and homes change.
Clay till, shallow rock and the footing
Steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or are tied into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. In Acton the soil is Halton clay till over limestone, and clay heaves when frost reaches under a skimped base.
On this higher escarpment ground the bedrock often runs close to the surface. A footing hole is a deep dig, so we read the ground at the free site visit instead of guessing, and we say before the work starts if the footing detail has to change.
Older Leathertown steps and newer-lot paths
The blocks around Mill Street carry brick and stone homes with front steps poured generations back. Those steps rarely sat on the base depth we use now, so the clay under them heaves with frost and they tip and settle. Decades of road salt scale the treads. Depending on how far gone they are, we resurface and re-support them or pour new steps on a compacted base so they stop moving with the season.
For newer lots we pour new flatwork, such as a wider front walkway, a side path to the backyard or a landing. We slope the concrete so meltwater runs off instead of freezing under it.
Low ground near Black Creek and Fairy Lake sits damper through a wet spring, so the slope at the foot of the steps matters more there.
Repair, relevel or rebuild?
Depending on how far gone they are, we either resurface and re-support worn steps or pour new ones on a proper compacted base.
We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each piece so you can compare it with anyone else's.
Straight answers
Why are the front steps on my older Acton home sinking and flaking?
Two things, usually together. Steps poured generations ago rarely sat on the base depth we use now, so the clay under them heaves with frost and they tip and settle. Road salt off Highway 7 scales the surface. We either resurface and re-support them or pour new steps on a compacted base.
Does shallow rock around Acton change a footing for steps?
It can. Acton sits on clay till over limestone, and on the higher escarpment ground the bedrock sometimes runs close to the surface. We check the ground at the site visit and tell you before work starts if it changes the footing detail.
Can you rebuild the walkway and steps together?
Yes. We plan the footing, rise, drainage and finish together, and the written quote names each piece.
Can you add a walkway to a newer Acton lot?
Yes. A wider front path, a side path to the backyard or a new landing are all walkway work we can quote. We pour them on a compacted granular base with slope that sheds water.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Acton?
Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, whether it needs footings and the condition of what is torn out drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
