Stoney Creek runs from the Lake Ontario shore up over the Niagara Escarpment, and the climb sorts the slab work. Above the escarpment, the mountain subdivisions west of Centennial Parkway are newer, and the calls are for a garage pad, a shed pad or a hot tub slab once the landscaping stage arrives. Below it, in the Old Town and the lakeside streets, the lots are older and the ground is wetter.
A slab sits on that ground for decades, so the ground decides how long it lasts. A pad poured on thin base cracks or tilts the first time frost gets under it, and the mountain clay and the lakeside clay both hold water where frost can reach.
The full spec, thickness, reinforcement and base depth, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page is about what a Stoney Creek slab needs in particular. Send the form for a free written quote; the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
Clay till, limestone and karst on the mountain
Above the escarpment, the subdivisions sit on clay till over limestone, with pockets of fractured karst rock near the Eramosa Karst that drain in ways a flat clay lot never shows. The clay heaves on a thin base, so a garage or shed pad needs depth and compaction first.
We check how the lot actually drains at the site visit. We dig to firm material, compact a Granular A base in lifts and grade around the pad so runoff goes where we want it rather than where the rock takes it.
Lakeside clay and a high water table
Below the escarpment, the lakeshore plain runs to clay near the water with a high water table, and the low ground near the creek and the shore holds water longest. Drainage around a pad matters more there. A pad that sheds water toward an older foundation wall feeds a wet basement, so we grade the pad away from the house and plan where the runoff goes before the forms go in.
Older lots often mean an old cracked pad has to come out before a new one goes in. We plan that, and the access for the crew, before the pour.
Garage and shed pads for newer streets
A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. We thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh is the right choice there.
Built for salt and freeze-thaw
The lake throws freeze-thaw cycles and snow load at Stoney Creek every winter, and a garage floor also takes the salt that drips off a parked car. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete outdoors and on garage floors, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt.
Straight answers
Does a garage pad on the Stoney Creek mountain need a different base than one near the lake?
The method is the same, but the risk is different. On the mountain, clay till over limestone heaves when frost gets under a thin base, so depth and compaction come first. Near the lake, clay and a high water table make the grade and the runoff plan the main work. We build the base to the ground we find at the site visit.
Does the karst rock on the mountain affect a garage pad?
It can, in the pockets near the Eramosa Karst where the limestone is fractured and surface water disappears into the rock. That is a reason to look first, not to worry. We check how the lot drains at the site visit and build the base and grading to suit.
Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in Stoney Creek?
Rebar. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking and suits light pads like sheds and hot tubs, but a garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid.
How much does a garage pad cost in Stoney Creek?
Size, finish, base and soil, and how the crew gets in all drive the cost, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
