Hamilton is two cities split by the Niagara Escarpment, the Mountain. Up top, the ground is clay till over limestone bedrock. Below, the lower city sits on heavy lake-deposited clay and silt, with a water table that runs high near the bay. A slab sits on that ground for decades, so the ground decides how long it lasts.

Where the job sits changes the work. Newer Mountain and growth-edge subdivisions call for garage-side and shed pads on clay till over limestone. In the older lower city, it is often an old cracked pad that has to come out before a new one goes in, on a lot where the truck may not reach the back.

The full spec, thickness, reinforcement and base depth, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page is about what a Hamilton slab needs in particular. Send the form for a free written quote; the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.

Mountain clay over limestone

On the Mountain, clay till holds water where frost can reach it under a slab on a thin base, and the pad lifts or tilts. In places the limestone sits close under the clay, so water does not always drain where you expect. We dig to firm material, compact a Granular A base in lifts and grade around the pad so water runs away from it.

We build the base to what we find under your lot.

Lower-city clay and water

Below the escarpment, the clay is heavy and the water table is higher near the bay, so drainage around a pad matters more. Many lower-city houses stand on old brick, stone or early block foundations, and a pad that sheds water toward one of those walls feeds a wet basement. We grade the pad away from the house and plan where the runoff goes before the forms go in.

Lower-city lots are older and tighter. An old cracked pad often has to come out first, and the concrete truck often cannot reach the back, so the crew moves the mix by pump or wheelbarrow. We plan the access before the pour.

Garage and shed pads on the Mountain

On the Mountain and at the growth edges, newer subdivisions mean garage and shed pads on clay till over limestone, so the base matters as much as the slab.

A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. We thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh is the right choice there.

Built for salt and freeze-thaw

Hamilton gets lake-effect snow and road salt every winter, and a garage floor also takes the salt that drips off a parked car. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete outdoors and on garage floors, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt.

Questions

Straight answers

Does a garage pad on the Hamilton Mountain need a different base than one in the lower city?

The method is the same, but the risk is different. On the Mountain, clay till over limestone heaves when frost gets under a thin base, so depth and compaction come first. In the lower city, heavy clay and a higher water table near the bay make the grade and the runoff plan the main work. We build the base to the ground we find at the site visit.

Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in Hamilton?

Rebar. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking and suits light pads like sheds and hot tubs, but a garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid. On clay or old fill, rebar earns its cost on almost any slab.

The truck cannot get into our backyard. Can you still pour a pad?

Yes. On tight lower-city lots, the crew moves the concrete by pump or wheelbarrow when the truck cannot reach the forms.

How much does a garage pad cost in Hamilton?

Size, finish, base and soil, and how the crew gets in all drive the cost, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
