Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Smithville
We pour garage pads, shed pads, hot tub pads and detached garage floors in Smithville and West Lincoln. The town sits on the Haldimand clay plain, where tight clay holds water and lifts a slab on a thin base, and the new west-side lots are still settling. So the base under a pad decides how it lasts. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Smithville is the main town of West Lincoln, up on the tableland above the escarpment. The new west-side surveys want the pours a builder skips, like a pad for the shed, a spot for a hot tub or a detached garage. Out on the concession roads, a farm yard wants a slab that takes a loaded truck.
Under all of it is tight clay. It holds water long after the snow goes, swells when it is wet, and lifts a slab where winter frost reaches under a thin base. So we dig to solid ground and compact a granular base in lifts before we pour. The full method is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page covers what Smithville ground and Smithville lots change about the job.
Clay and a high water table decide the base
Smithville sits on the Haldimand clay plain. Clay that stays wet is what lifts a pad: water sits under the slab, freezes and pushes up. The fix is depth and drainage, not just thicker concrete. We excavate to stable ground, build a compacted Granular A base in lifts, and grade the pad so melt runs away from it.
The Twenty Mile Creek runs through the middle of town, and the water table sits high on the flats near it. On those lots we look at where the water goes before we set a form: the grade, the downspouts and the low spots where water would sit against the slab.
New west-side lots: wait for the ground to settle
In the new west-side surveys, the soil is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two. A pad poured before the ground finishes moving can crack or tip. We compact the base mechanically rather than trust the backfill, and tell you if the ground is not ready yet.
A pad is a small pour, and small pours are most economical when they share a truck. If you also plan to widen the driveway, pouring both on the same day spreads the fixed costs. Our Smithville driveway page covers that side of the job.
Garage floors, shop slabs and farm yards
A detached garage floor takes 125 to 150 mm of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on a 10M rebar grid, with the edges thickened to about 300 mm. Shed and hot tub pads get welded wire mesh. If the project needs a permit, we flag it at the quote.
Past the edge of town, at Caistor Centre, St. Anns, Grassie and Wellandport, a yard slab often has to take a loaded truck or farm equipment. That is a thicker slab on a deeper base, reinforced for the wheel loads, and on clay that holds water we dig out the soft ground first. We look at what rolls across it before we quote. Keep vehicles off a new slab for at least 48 hours.
Straight answers
We just bought in a new west-end survey. When should we pour a garage pad or shed pad?
If you can wait, give the lot a season or two to settle. New-subdivision soil is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two, so a pour that goes down early can crack or tip. We compact the base mechanically and tell you plainly if the ground is ready.
Will a pad on Smithville clay heave in winter?
Clay holds water right where frost can reach it, and a slab on a shallow or poorly compacted base gets lifted when that water freezes. We dig to solid ground, compact a granular base in lifts, and grade the pad so melt runs away from it.
Rebar or mesh for a garage pad in Smithville?
Rebar for anything that carries a vehicle: a 10M grid at 400 mm, with thickened edges on a floating garage slab. Mesh is right for light pads like sheds and hot tubs. The written quote names the reinforcement.
Can you pour a farm-yard slab outside Smithville?
Yes. A pad that takes a loaded truck or a tractor is thicker than a driveway slab, on a deeper compacted base, and reinforced for the wheel loads. We look at what rolls across it before we quote, then put the number in writing.
How much does a concrete pad cost in Smithville?
Size sets the start, then the base your ground needs. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
