Concrete Patios in Smithville

We pour concrete patios across Smithville and West Lincoln, from the new west-side surveys to the older yards near downtown. Smithville sits on the Haldimand clay plain, where wet clay heaves a slab on a thin base, so every patio here gets a dug-out, compacted granular base, air-entrained 32 MPa concrete and a slope of about 2 percent away from the house. Union-certified crews, a lifetime warranty on labour, and a free written quote.

Smithville is the main town of West Lincoln, up on the tableland above the escarpment. It sits on the tight clay end of Niagara. That clay holds water long after the snow goes, swells when it is wet, and lifts a slab wherever winter frost reaches under a thin base.

A patio carries no cars, so the concrete itself has an easy life. On Smithville clay, what decides how long a patio lasts is the ground under it and where the water goes. The full method is on our concrete patios page; this page is about what Smithville's ground and homes change.

Wet clay pushes water at the house

A patio sits right against the back wall of the house. On clay that drains slowly, a patio poured flat, or one that has settled toward the house, sends every rain and every spring melt down along the foundation. So we slope every patio about 2 percent away from the house, and we look at where your downspouts empty before we set a form.

Under the slab, we dig out the soft ground, build up a granular base in compacted lifts, and saw the control joints early. On the flats near the Twenty Mile Creek, where the water table sits high, we take extra care with the grade, because the ground there already holds water close to the house.

New west-side backyards and older yards downtown

In the new subdivisions on the west side of town, the backyard patio is often a pour the builder left for the homeowner. That lot is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two. Let the lot go through a spring after the final grade, and we compact the base mechanically rather than trust it.

Around the downtown core and the older blocks near the station, a new patio often replaces an old slab that has cracked or tipped toward the house. We take out the old concrete, find what failed under it, fix that, and pour the new patio with the right slope. Tear-out goes in the written quote.

Finish, cure and when to book

Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 100 mm of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters.

Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after 7 days, and it is ready for a sealer at about 28 days. We leave the cure and sealing timing with you in writing. Smithville books into our regular Niagara runs through the pouring season, so quoting in spring tends to get you a better slot.

Questions

Straight answers

Why do patios crack and sink on the clay around Smithville?

Because Smithville sits on the Haldimand clay plain. That clay holds water instead of draining, and when winter frost reaches wet clay under a slab, it lifts the slab. A patio on a thin base moves, cracks, and can tip toward the house. We dig out the soft ground, compact a granular base in lifts and slope the patio away from the house.

We just moved into a new house on the west side. When can we put in a patio?

Once the builder has set the final grade and the lot has been through a spring. New-subdivision soil is disturbed backfill that keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically. Ask for a quote in spring, because summer is the busy time.

Our old patio slopes toward the house. Can you replace it?

Yes. We break out the old slab, find what made it settle, and fix the base before we pour. The new patio slopes about 2 percent away from the house, so water runs off toward the yard and not down the foundation.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Smithville?

Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, the base the clay needs, and whether an old slab has to come out all set the number. We do not post a flat rate, because it would mislead you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
