Sand and loam up top
Up out of the river valley, New Hamburg sits on moraine sand and farm loam. Sand and loam drain better than clay, so a pad here is less likely to lift with frost than one on heavy clay. The trade-off is that sandy ground moves when water runs over it, so we contain the base along the edges and steer downspouts away from the slab so runoff cannot wash the support out from under it.
Wetter ground by the Nith
Down by the Nith, the water table is higher and the ground stays wet longer in spring. There we pay more attention to drainage: a compacted granular base and a slope that sends melt away from the slab and the house. Will a garage pad heave in winter on New Hamburg ground?
Usually less than on clay. Most of the town sits on moraine sand and loam, which drain better than clay. The risk on sandy ground is different: runoff can wash the base out from under the edges. We contain the base and slope the pad so water runs off and away.
We live near the Nith River. Does that change the pad?
It can. The low ground by the river has a higher water table, so the base stays wet longer in spring. We look at the lot at the site visit and build the base and slope so water leaves the slab and the house.
