So we dig to firm ground and compact a granular base before we pour. Garage and shop slabs get 125 to 150 mm of concrete on a 10M rebar grid at 400 mm. Sand that drains, edges that wash
Most of the ground around Ayr is the moraine sand and gravel that covers the south of Waterloo Region. Sand drains fast, so frost heaves a pad here less than on the Brant County clay a few minutes west. The risk is erosion: runoff carries sand out from under an edge, and the pad cracks where it lost support.
So we compact the base in lifts, contain it at the edges, and slope the pad so melt and rain leave the way the ground can take it. Where a downspout empties near the pad, we plan where that water goes before we set a form.
Newer subdivisions: fill and builder grade
On the newer streets the lot is often fill and topsoil where a pad is going. Concrete laid straight on that has nothing solid under it. We dig out to firm ground, bring in granular base and compact it ourselves rather than trust the builder's grade.

Low ground, workshops and farm lots
Near the Nith River and Cedar Creek the water table is higher than on the streets above. On those lots we look hard at drainage under and around the pad. Where a house wall runs damp in a wet spring, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Ayr first.
Out past the village, North Dumfries farm lots call for shop floors and equipment pads. A detached garage or shop floor wants anchor bolts set in the wet concrete and a gentle slope toward the door. Straight answers
Our Ayr lot is sandy. Does a garage pad still need a deep base?
Yes, for a different reason than on clay. Sand drains well, so frost heave is less of a risk. The risk on sand is washout, where runoff carries the base out from under the edges. So we still build a compacted granular base, and we put the effort into containing its edges and moving water away from the pad.
We're in a newer Ayr subdivision. When should we pour a shed pad or garage pad?
Once the builder's final grade is set and the lot has come through a season. New lots are disturbed fill and keep settling. We look at how the ground behaves on the site visit and tell you if it is ready.
Rebar or mesh for a pad in Ayr?
Rebar for anything that carries a vehicle: a 10M grid at 400 mm. Mesh is right for light pads like sheds and hot tubs. The written quote names the reinforcement.
How much does a concrete pad cost in Ayr?
Size sets the start, then the load the pad carries, its thickness and reinforcement, the base your ground needs, and how easily the concrete can reach the spot.
