Ayr is a village in North Dumfries Township, at the south end of Waterloo Region where the Nith River and Cedar Creek come together. Scottish settlers built it in the 1830s out of three mill hamlets, Mudge's Mills, Jedburgh and Nithvale, and named it after Ayr in Scotland. For a stretch it was a manufacturing town, home to what was once the largest agricultural works in Canada, and the brick and stone village core dates to that era.
Since the 1950s the village has grown the way the towns around it have, with new homes built for people who work in Cambridge, Kitchener and beyond. What the ground here does to concrete
Ayr sits in the valley where the Nith River and Cedar Creek meet, and the low ground near the water carries a higher water table than the streets above it.
