Ayr is a village in North Dumfries Township, built in the 1830s out of three mill hamlets where the Nith River and Cedar Creek meet. The brick and stone village core dates to its manufacturing years.
The method, the bonding agent, the two-pass coat and the mesh, is on our parging page. This page is the Ayr part: what to check on your lot before the coat goes on. The quote is free and written.
Old village brick and stone: strip before you re-coat
Water gets behind a coat, freezes and pushes it off. So we sound the band and take loose material right off before any new coat goes on.
If a crumbling coat has been painted, the paint seals moisture in. Plan on stripping back to sound material before any new coat.
Low ground by the water or sandy upland: what we check first
The central part of Ayr lies on the Nith floodplain, and the low ground near the creeks carries a higher water table than the streets above it. A wall there feeds water to the back of the coat. We look at where the water goes before we look at the coat, and we tell you at the quote if the wall needs basement waterproofing first. Parging is a weather skin, not waterproofing.
The wider township runs to moraine sand and gravel. Sand drains fast but washes where runoff runs hard, so on upland lots we check the downspouts and the grade along the wall as well as the coat.
Straight answers
My Ayr village house keeps losing its parging. What do you check?
We sound the band, strip what is loose and tell you at the quote what we find. If the old coat was painted, paint seals moisture in, so we strip back to sound material first.
Does my Ayr lot's position by the Nith or Cedar Creek change the job?
It changes what we check first. Low ground near the water carries a higher water table, so we look at where the water goes before the coat. On sandy upland we check downspouts and grade, because sand washes out where runoff runs hard.
How much does parging cost in Ayr?
There is no flat rate. Prep, the height of the exposed band, mesh and access change the job. The quote is free and in writing.
