Clay till, shallow rock and a floating pad
A detached garage pad in Southern Ontario is usually a floating slab, with no deep foundation, so the whole pad rides any frost movement as one piece. On Acton's clay till that makes the base the most important part. We dig to stable material, compact the granular base in lifts, and thicken the edges where the walls will sit.
Where bedrock runs close to the surface, the dig can be shallower than on the deeper soils near the lake, and rock can change how we shape the base and handle drainage. We read the ground at the free site visit and put anything it changes in the written quote.
Newer streets at the edge of town: the pad the builder left out
The newer streets at the edges of Acton are where the finishing pours get asked for: a shed pad at the back of the lot, a hot tub pad, a detached garage slab.
A hot tub pad has to be level and reinforced for the load, because a filled tub with people in it is heavy. We pour it a little larger than the tub's footprint so the steps and service panels land on concrete.
Older streets near Mill Street and Black Creek
The older brick and stone blocks around Mill Street are the old core of town. Low ground near Black Creek and Fairy Lake sits damper through a wet spring, so a pad there needs a base that drains and a surface sloped so meltwater leaves it. Garage floors, sheds and salt
A shed pad takes welded wire mesh. A garage or shop floor carries a vehicle, so it gets a 10M rebar grid at a 400 mm spacing and a slab 125 to 150 mm thick. A light resin shed does fine on a compacted gravel pad, and we will say so at the visit rather than sell concrete you do not need.
Road salt off Highway 7 and freeze-thaw swings on higher ground are hard on a garage floor, so we pour air-entrained mix and slope the floor toward the door so melt off the car finds its way out.

Do I need concrete for a shed in Acton, or will gravel do?
